A 3 by 3 element planar array of isotropic sources is to be operated such that its main beam may
be scanned through small angular positions in a room. The array is distributed along the x-y plane
on the centre of the ceiling so that the main beam is pointing in the z direction when uniform
amplitude and zero phase weighting is applied to the elements. The inter-element spacing is a
half-wavelength along each of the axes.
a) Derive the basic expression that describes the radiation pattern for equal amplitude weighting
and a progressive phase weighting between elements.
b) What will be the progressive phase weighting required between the elements in the array in
order to move the main beam to the corner of the room if the room is 6m by 6m by 3m.
