The freezing cold spell at the beginning of 2010 not only increased demand for road salt, (see the additional case study for chapter 6) but it increased demand for gas in the UK. Usage reached 454 cubic metres; the previous record was 449m set in January 2003. The National Grid which is responsible for energy in the UK issued several warnings in a matter of days that demand could outstrip supply and asked supplier so increase the supply. The National Grid also told major gas users, such as power plants, to reduce demand.
Big generators, such as E.On, have both gas-fired and coal-fired power stations and are able to choose between the two. In total, 27 large gas users were asked to switch - 12 in the East Midlands and 15 in the North West.

- The impact of COVID-19 on the newspaper industry of Bangladesh Newspaper circulation drops by 50-70% while online readership triples The coronavirus pandemic has hit hard newspaper circulations around the world – including in Bangladesh – although the demand for online news jumped up significantly. There were 1,463 listed companies, and 5,712 other types of securities, including warrants and bonds. The affected stock included HSBC, Cathay Pacific, and the Hong Kong exchange itself. These stocks have a combined market value of HK$1.5 trillion. The companies tried to make price-sensitive announcements during the lunchtime trading break but due to the attack, the announcements failed to reach the investors. The trading system was not affected but investors rely on timely financial information posted on the HKExnews website to make investment decision. After investigations, the law en- forcement department arrested a businessman for the attack. He was sentenced to…
