Air is contained in a piston/cylinder device at an initial state where the volume is 1.7 m3, temperature is 250 K, and pressure is 454 kPa. In a portion of an engine cycle, air goes through the following two sequential processes:
Process 1-2: It is heated while the system is allowed to expand at constant pressure, until the volume increases by 55%.
Process 2-3: It is heated further to maintain a constant temperature while the volume increases by 55% again.
To simplify this problem, you can treat air as an ideal gas with constant specific heats.
a.) On your paper, draw these processes on a P-V diagram. Label states 1, 2, and 3.
b.) During these two combined processes, how much heat is transferred to the air, in kJ?

- A closed system consists of gas of 2 kg initially in state 1 with p1 4bar and specific volume V1 = 1m /kg. The system undergoes a power cycle consisting of the following processes: Process 1-2: polytropic process to v2 = 2m3 /kg, p2 = 1bar; Process 2-3: isobaric compression to v1; Process 3-1: isochoric process to p1. Draw the cycle on a p – v (specific volume) diagram. Show the system states, cycle direction, and the cycle (net) work.arrow_forwardA gas with specific volume v₁ = 1 m³/Kg and pressure p₁=1bar in a closed system undergoes a thermodynamic cycle which consists of the following three separate processes: 1->2: Isobaric compression to v₂-0.25 m³/Kg 2->3: Isometric heating. 3->1: Isothermal expansion (pV = constant) to the initial volume. Calculate the specific work produced by the gas per cycle. Present your answer in kJ/kg.arrow_forwardSteam in a piston-cylinder assembly undergoes a polytropic process, with n = 2, from an initial state where V₁ = 4.38600 ft³, p₁ = 400 lbf/in², and u₁ = 1322.4 Btu/lb to a final state where u₂ = 1036.0 Btu/lb and v₂ = 3.393 ft³/lb. The mass of the steam is 2.5 lb. Changes in kinetic and potential energy can be neglected. Determine the change in volume, in ft3, the energy transfer by work, in Btu, and the energy transfer by heat, in Btu.arrow_forward
- 3. Air is contained within a piston-cylinder assembly The cross sectional area of the piston is 0.01 m². Initially the piston is at 1 bar and 25°C, 10 cm above the base of the cylinder. In this state, the spring exerts no force on the piston. The system is then reversibly heated to 100°C. As the spring is compressed, it exerts a force on the piston according to: F=-kx where k= 50,000 N/m and x is the displacement length from its uncompressed position. First, heat is transferred to the system by keeping the piston constant and this process is continued until the pressure is 3.2 bar. the process is maintained by allowing the volume to change. At the end of this process, the temperature reaches 50C. Assuming the state changes as if balanced, calculate the following: a)He amount of heat transferred during constant pressure operation b)Show the state changes on the P-v diagram.arrow_forward
