According to the World Systems theory, today’s world is the outcome of uneven development associated with processes of colonialism, imperialism, and the emergence of capitalism – processes which are still ongoing (e.g., neo-colonialism/imperialism, globalization). Using historical and/or contemporary examples discuss how unequal economic, political, and cultural relations of power contribute to uneven development across different world regions (e.g., developed/developing countries, Global North/Global South) and at various scales (global, regional, national, urban/local).
Marks will be based on degree of organization, clarity of expression, and use of examples where applicable.
Answer should be about 2 pages long (double spaced) and approximately 500-700 words. Develop 2-4 strong points and these should be illustrated with concrete examples when appropriate. Take the time to plan your answer, starting with an outline of the main ideas you wish to discuss, and then develop them in more detail. Make sure your answer is clearly structured and edited (introduction, body with several paragraphs, conclusion). You are encouraged to use concrete & illustrative examples.
