According to Swestyani et al. (2018), mind mapping is an efficient method to take notes and brainstorm topics. This is done by writing down first thoughts related to an issue. My Mind Mapping activity was based on Chapter 15 Law and Ethics. By looking at the title my initial thoughts were that the chapter would discuss how to ensure patient safety in maintained. I also wrote down security and moral values of healthcare professionals when providing care to patients. Reading this chapter, I learned about the definition of law in healthcare and how it can affect an organization if these laws are violated. I also learned about the judgement and decisions that can lead to lawful violations which can harm yourself as well as your place of work.  According to Tipton (2015), negligence and malpractice to a patient can be legal issues that can affect health care professionals and an organization. In health care, there are so many state laws and regulations that you must follow in order to be in compliance. When providing standard of care, health care professionals need to ensure that they are following medical standard guidelines in order to be in compliance. For example, in my place of work, we have a zero tolerance for violations to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and our legal and compliance team provide yearly trainings on the importance of HIPAA. The chapter also discussed the responsibility that we have in repaying our student debt back once school is completed. It also focused on the importance of learning your employee rights when entering the workforce. The chapter concentrated on ensuring that healthcare professionals continue with course development that will assist them with maintaining their licensing and credentials. The section that reinforced the difference between professional and personal relationships was very helpful with identifying how to build working relationships with patients and co-workers, (Tipton, 2015). 1. According to the statement above what can one agree and or disagree with? Through completing the Mind Mapping activity in Chapter 15 of our textbook, I wrote down words and phrases that related to the words of law and ethics when it comes to health care delivery. The words I wrote were Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), board certification, credentials, malpractice, ethical business practices, lawful and accurate billing and coding, medically necessary care, empathy, and honesty. Through reading the chapter, I noticed the law and ethics go hand in hand. A law seeks to be a standard or principle that everyone abides by through laws that are enforced in courts or the judicial system (Tipton, 2017). Ethics for health care professionals rely around honesty, integrity, and responsibility through being governed by ethical codes (Tipton, 2017).  When providers are providing care, they must provide that care with certain standards, while respecting patients and respecting their views and beliefs. Health care professionals also need to be qualified and possess the ability to make good ethical decisions for patients. Patient confidentiality should also be respected, while employees should all receive equal treatment (Tipton, 2017). Health care providers are forever students and are always continuing their medical education to ensure they are lawfully practicing medicine. Overall, patient safety and doing what is in the best interest of patients, while ethically treating all patients equal is what I took away from this chapter. After looking at the words I wrote down in this exercise, my words were mostly along the lines of what this chapter outlined regarding law and ethics in health care delivery. In the health care industry, there are often ethical dilemmas that can arise. For example, when there is a poor management of patient information, it can lead to negative patient outcomes as well as strain the overall relationship between a patient and provider. Using the strategies of resolution, stalling, disclosure, and consultation, providers can use these tools to better cope with increasing patient communication (Ewuoso et al., 2021). If providers are honest and open with their patients, and the line of communication is clear and honest, it will always lead to less legal issues for both sides. Often, if providers fail to disclose certain information, it can lead to malpractice claims against them. That is why law and ethics go hand in hand. 2.
