A spring with constant k=200 N/m is fixed to the top of an incline that makes an angle of 40.0 degrees with the horizontal. A projectile with mass 1.10 kg is projected up the plane, form an initial horizontal position that is d from the end of the uncompessed spring.
a) If the incline is frictionless and the initial kinetic energy of the projectile is 17.0 J, how much will the spring be compressed?
b) If there is a coefficient of friction of 0.200 and the spring must compress by 1.50 cm at the moment when the projectile stops (say, to trigger an event like a switch) then what must the initial speed of the projectile be? All other conditions are same as in the setup.

- A block of mass 3.8 kg is placed against a horizontal spring of constant k = 735 N/m and pushed so the spring compresses by 0.0550 m. (a)What is the elastic potential energy of the block-spring system (in J)? (b) If the block is now released and the surface is frictionless, calculate the block's speed (in m/s) after leaving the spring.arrow_forwardA spring is connected on one end to a wall and the other is free to be compressed. The spring constant is 25 N/cm for the spring. A 2.0 kg mass is pressed against the spring and then released and the entire system is placed on horizontal frictionless surface. (a) How much is the spring compressed when 15.0 J of energy is stored in the spring? (10.9 cm) (b) What is the acceleration when the spring is at 1/2 the maximum compression distance? The crate then slides along the incline, reaches a spring of spring constant k = 92 N/m , and compresses the spring by Δs = 15.0 cm before stopping. a) what is the distance d, in meters, along the incline that the crate slides, assuming there is no friction? b)What distance ds, in meters, along the incline had the crate moved when it just touched the spring? c)If there were friction between the crate and incline, what coefficient of kinetic friction would stop the crate after it travels ds (just before it compresses the spring)?arrow_forward

If the ramp has ρ=1.5m and the spring is compressed 0.1156 m, will the box be able to reach point B if the coefficient of kinetic friction of the ramp, μk = 0.3?arrow_forwardThe magnitude of the force required to compress an imperfect horizontal spring a distance x is given by Fbs = kx +bx^3 where k=120N/m and b=18N/m^3. If you use a 7.5kg block to compress the spring a distance of 1.6m and then let it go, what speed will the block have when it leaves the spring? Assume the surfaces are smooth enough that any frictional forces can be neglected.arrow_forwardFigure (a) applies to the spring in a cork gun (Figure (b)); it shows the spring force as a function of the stretch or compression of the spring. The spring is compressed by 7.00 cm and used to propel a 3.90 g cork from the gun. (a) What is the speed of the cork if it is released as the spring passes through its relaxed position? The block remains on the track at all times. 30.0 cm This answer has not been graded yet. (b) Calculate d. m 50.0 cm (a) What would you include in the system? A spring-loaded launcher is aimed vertically upward, and compressed 0.13 m beyond its equilibrium position, then locked into place. The spring constant is k 60000 N/m. A block of mass 2 kg is placed on the launcher. When the spring lock is released, the block is launched upward to a maximum height, H. What is this height, H, if the block loses 17 Joules of mechanical energy to air resistance (during its upward flight)?
