A smokestack emits pollutant Z into the air on a sunny day. The effective stack
height is 270 m. The wind speed is 4 m/s, due east. Your house is located 4.0 km due east of the smokestack. The ground level concentration of pollutant A is 2.0 mg/m3at your house.
Your friend lives 4.0 km east and 1.5 km south of the smokestack.
a. What is the emission rate of the pollutant in kg/s?
b. For the emission rate determined in part a, you now want to know the concentration of
pollutant Z at ground level at your friend’s house.
i. What parameters change in the dispersion modeling equation? For each
parameter, include the parameter symbol, a definition of the parameter, and its
new quantitative value and required units.
ii. Is the concentration at your friend’s house lower, the same or higher than the
concentration at your house and why? (you do not need to calculate the
concentration)

- A monomedia anthracite filter is designed with the following specifications: effective size 1.1 mm, uniformity coefficient 1.4, and density 1650 kg/m³. Calculate the backwash rate required to get 25 percent bed expansion at the design summer temperature of 22 C (p = 998.7 kg/m³, μ = 9.55 x 10-4 kg/m-s). Use the midpoint Ergun parameters for anthracite: ky = 228, ki = 4.4, &f = 50%.arrow_forward(iii) Calculate the volume (in L) occupied by 5.2 kg of CO2 at 152 kPa and 315Karrow_forwardOn an afternoon with moderate incoming solar radiation and an average wind speed of 2.5 m/s at a height of 10 m above the ground surface, a power plant emits sulfur dioxide at a rate of 0.01 kg/s. The effective height of stack is 130 m. The wind speed at the effective stack height is 2.8 m/s. Calculate the concentration (in ug/m3) of sulfur dioxide at ground elevation, directly 3 km downwind from the stack. Show all work and use figures to determine dispersion coefficientsarrow_forward

- A point source Gaussian plume model for a power plant uses 50 m as the effective stack height. You are concerned about pollutant levels at night, and the night is typically fully overcast with a wind speed of 5 m/s. Your concern in with ground-level pollution at two house locations, A and B, which are 1.2 and 1.4 km directly downwind from the stack. (a) At what distance will the maximum concentration of pollution occur under these conditions? Which location (A or B) would have the higher level of pollution?(b) Suppose during the day the sky clears up, and the atmosphere becomes moderately unstable, and the wind speed stays around 5 m/s. Will the location downwind at which the maximum concentration occurs move? If so, will it move closer to the stack or further away from the stack? (H remains 50 m). (c) Under the new conditions in part b, which house would experience the most pollution?arrow_forwardPlease solve this problem and provide formulaarrow_forwardDo the construction contractor protect the utility reference stakes and use the suitable construction techniques to protect the structure?arrow_forward
