Question

A plane flies at an airspeed of 241 km/h. A wind is blowing at 78 km/h toward the direction 60° east of north.

(a) In what direction should the plane head in order to fly due north relative to the ground?
....................... ° west of north

(b) What is the speed of the plane relative to the ground?
........................ km/h
Expert Solution
Step 1

The velocity of an object is a relative quantity. it depends on the motion of the observer. If the observer is moving it will observe a different velocity of the object as compared to  a stationary observer.

The relative velocity thus becomes important while calculating the velocity with respect to different observers. For example here the airplane speed with respect to wind will be different as compared to the velocity of an airplane with respect to ground as the wind is moving.
