A flexural composite member consists of the following; Grade 50 W16x57, 5 1/2-inch, normal weight concrete slab (f’c = 4 ksi), and an effective width of 96-inches. An elastic analysis of the normal stresses through a composite section are required when determining the deflection of a composite beam and can occasionally be used to limit the design strength to a yield condition.
a) Determine the location of the neutral axis (N.A.) with respect to the bottom flange
of the steel beam.
b) Calculate the normal stress at the top of the concrete slab and the normal
stress at the top and bottom of the steel beam with a moment of 200 kip-ft
c) What is the new location of the neutral axis?

- An aligned and continuous fiber reinforced composite consists of fibers with an elastic modulus of 255 GPa and a matrix with an elastic modulus of 2.7 GPa. If the fibers are required to carry 98% of the total load in the longitudinal direction (isostrain condition), determine the volume fraction of the fibers and matrix needed to accomplish this task. Also, determine the composite modulus of elasticity for this case.arrow_forwardy 1 k 2" -12"- 3" 10" 10" -x For the composite area shown below, Find the centroid of the composite area. Determine ly of the composite area about its y' centroidal axis found in part (a).arrow_forwardThe composite shaft shown consists of a solid brass segment (1) and a solid aluminum segment (2) that are connected at flange B and securely attached to rigid walls at A and C. Brass segment (1) has a diameter of 18 mm, a length of L₁ 235 mm, and a shear modulus of 39 GPa. Aluminum segment (2) has a diameter of 24 mm, a length of L₂ = 165 mm, and a shear modulus of 28 GPa. If a concentrated torque of 270 N-m is applied to flange B, determine (a) the maximum shear stress magnitudes in segments (1) and (2). (b) the rotation angle of flange B relative to support A. The modulus of elasticity is 10 GPa for the wood and 200 GPa for the steel. The vertical shear is 4.4 kN. 12 mm 250 mm 12 mm 150 mm- Determine the average shearing stress in the bolts. (Round the final answers to two decimal places.) The average shearing stress in the bolts is MPa.arrow_forward
