Question
A circular footing with a 1.5 m diameter is to be constructed 1.22 m
below the ground surface. The subsoil consists of a uniform deposit
of dense soil having the following strength parameters:
Angle of Friction = 25o Nc = 24.1 Nq = 13.1 Ny = 9.1
Cohesion = 48 kN/m2
Unit weight of soil = 20.12 kN/m2
The groundwater table is at a great depth and its effect can be
ignored.
Determine the following:
a) Ultimate bearing Capacity of the soil
b) Compute the gross allowable bearing capacity of the soil using a
factor of safety of 3.
c) Compute the total allowable load that the footing can carry.
