Question
Consider the pendulum shown in the figure. The pendulum is released at point A,
swings through its lowest point at point C, and reaches its turning point at point D.
You may ignore the effects of air resistance. Answer the following questions:
A
В
D
C
(a) Draw the free body diagram when the object is located at point B.
(b) On your free-body diagram, draw a circle around the force components that
contribute to the centripetal acceleration and draw a square around the force
components that contribute to the tangential acceleration.
(c) Draw the direction of the total acceleration vector when the object is located at
point B.

Step 1

There are two force acting on the bob of the pendulum one is due to the force of the gravity that acts downward and tension on the string directed towards the point of suspension.

When the bob is the lowest point at C. The force due to gravity and the tension are acting in opposite direction.

When the bob is at point B. String makes an angle of θ of with the vertical direction. By resolving the forces acting on the bob. One component is perpendicular component and the other is towards the direction of acceleration.

Where we resolve the force acting due to gravity, the perpendicular component directed opposite to the tension force acting on the bob.

ar = radial accelerationat = tangential acceleration
