Transcribed Image Text:8.67 Free recall memory strategy. Psychologists who study
①memory often use a measure of "free recall" (e.g., the
RECALL number of correctly recalled items in a list of to-be-
remembered items). The strategy used to memorize the
list-for example, category clustering-is often just as
important. Researchers at Central Michigan University
developed an algorithm for computing measures of cat-
egory clustering in Advances in Cognitive Psychology
(Oct. 2012). One measure, called ratio of repetition, was
recorded for a sample of 8 participants in a memory study.
These ratios are listed in the table. Test the theory that the
average ratio of repetition for all participants in a similar
memory study differs from .5. Select an appropriate Type
I error rate for your test.

- (3.8.8) The Massachusetts Department of Public Health collects annual data on brain injuries in school athletics. In 2011, the department reported that in their survey of middle and high school students, about 18 percent of students who played on a team in the previous 12 months reported symptoms of a traumatic brain injury while playing sports. These symptoms include losing consciousness, having memory problems, double or blurry vision, headaches, or nausea. During that year, about 200,000 Massachusetts high school students participated in extracurricular sports. How many reported injuries were there? 200,000 x 0.18= 36,000 people reported injuries. b. The survey reports the number injured as a percentage of the number of students participating in extracurricular sports. What is the number injured as a percentage of the population of Massachusetts? In 2011, the population of Massachusetts was 6,512,227arrow_forwardIdentify the appropriate test to use for the following scenario: In a study of memory development, researchers selected pictures that could be classified into one of five categories (food, clothes, toys, furniture, animals). The pictures were presented in a random order to eight 4-year-olds and eight 5-year-olds, who were asked to memorize the pictures. The researchers used the order in which the pictures were recalled to obtain a clustering score for each child. A score of 1 meant that the pictures were not clustered by category at all during recall; whereas a score of 10 reflected perfect clustering of objects during recall (for example, all foods recalled first, then all animals, then all toys, etc.). Using alpha = .05, determine whether or not the children of different age groups differed in terms of clustering in memory. Specifically, she hypothesized that people's memory would worsen under conditions of high distraction. To test this, she recruited 100 participants from the community ranging in age from 18-63, and randomly assigned them to either a high distraction or low distraction group. In the high distraction group, participants were asked to memorize list of 20 neutral words ( e.g. chair, light, rabbit) while a smoke detector went off approximately every 30 seconds . In the low distraction group , the participants were asked to memorize the list of 20 words with no sounds present . At the end of a 15-minute study period , all participants were asked to write down as many of the words as they could recall. Identify the dependent variable .arrow_forward
