Buffer solutions are those solutions, which oppose the pH change take place by addition of small amount of acids or bases. This is due to pH action of buffer solution. The salt and weak acid or base present in buffer neutralise the incoming acids (H3O+) and bases (OH-).

 

In the given buffer solution, HCO3-/CO32- , carbonate ions behave as conjugated base of bicarbonate ions, and bicarbonate ions behave as conjugated acid of Carbonate ions.
