The endocrine system is a system of glands that regulate the physiological processes by synthesizing and secreting hormones. The hormones act as the chemical messengers in the body and are released by the endocrine glands. These hormones are very specific in their functionality and only target the specific organs. Since the endocrine glands are typically ductless, the released hormones from them travel through the blood in the circulatory system to reach their target organs. The major endocrine glands are pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid gland, hypothalamus, ovaries, testes and adrenal glands. These glands secrete hormones which specifically interact with their target organs only. Out of all these glands, hypothalamus is responsible for controlling and regulating the overall endocrine system. It is a neuroendocrine gland that connects the complex network of the endocrine system to the nervous system of the body through another neuroendocrine gland that is the pituitary gland. 

The endocrine response lasts for longer durations because the hormones or the chemical messengers are usually transported through the blood. As long as the hormonal levels in blood are maintained, the response of the endocrine lasts till then.
