- Do you agree or disagree why? Prior to this video I had not been introduced to the concept of genetically modified babies or "designer babies". However, a concept that was brought up in comparison to the designer babies was IVF babies. This concept is more familiar to me and made me think of the great possibilities designer babies could bring, but at what cost? As IVF first became popular it seemed to be well known that was was a possibility for well-off financially families. Although designer babies may have benefits such as lowering the risk to develop hereditary diseases, I don't think this concept would be widely accessible to varying income levels.I believe that there are many good things that can come out of people getting to design their baby’s genetic material. But there are also many bad things as well. From the article by Bio medical about the pros and cons of having a designer baby it states that a pro is that this type of engineering can “ might help prevent genetic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s Disease, down syndrome, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and many others”. I think that it is great that we could get rid of Alzheimer’s due to how destructive it can be to the people that suffer it. But I think the other diseases that it can eliminate is horrible due to them making our world a more unique place such as people with autism, Down syndrome. By doing this it could eliminate the whole population of people with disabilities community and make everyone “normal”. Another bad that I found in the article Ethics of designer babies which states that a major flaw for these babies is “designer baby technologies suggest…1. Do you think genetic engineering is a real solution? What about using genetics as a crime control or treatment method? What ethical issues would this raise? 2. What are some of the problems facing women in the corrections workplace? Are these the same kinds of problems found throughout the criminal justice system are they unique? Explain your answer. 3. What is the relationship between incarceration rates in this country and crime rates? Which seems to be driving the other? Does the research show that the relationship is intuitive or counterintuitive?
- 1. What is the importance of doing Genetic Assessment to high risk pregnant clients? 2. What are the categories to require Genetic testing on women? 3. How are you going to counsel a woman who have found to have genetic abnormalities?A) Ensuring Equal Access to Customized Medicine How can healthcare providers ensure equitable access to expensive technologies that not only treat illnesses but also promise to promote longevity and enhance patients’ quality of life? What are the ethics of cost/benefit analyses when human lives are at stake? What policies could help avoid “genetic discrimination” when medical test results reveal conditions or genetic susceptibilities to specific diseases that weren’t the subject of the original tests?2. Imagine that you are in your late 30s or early 40s and decide that you want a child. You realize that you’re at greater risk of having a child with Down’s Syndrome. What sorts of genetic screening are available today? If you find out that this child has this condition, do you think it’s appropriate to have an abortion? Why or why not? Question: Does elective abortion of fetuses with physical or other developmental disabilities have an effect on the perception of personhood, dignity, and rights in society? Explain.
- 1. What values are at odds in the controversy about the use of fetal stem cell in research? How does this differ from the use of adult stem cells in research? 2. What are common misunderstandings about stem cell research, particularly in the area of science? 3. What are the benefits of using adult stem cells rather than fetal stem cells?Below are some of the arguments about the use of transgenic organisms. From your own perspective, explain your answer in the questions in not more than 5 sentences. 1. If you are a farmer would you take the chance of growing crops that are pest resistant? Why or why not? 2. Considering the knowledge gained in genetic engineering, would you try to patronize GMO fruits and vegetables? Why or why not? 3. Is creating or altering genes of an organism a form of Blasphemy to the creator (God)? Why? 4. Is genetic engineering morally permissible or not?Do you think that everyone should be required to have genetic counseling before having a baby? WHY or WHY not? If required, what do you envision the testing and counseling looking like? What would be the advantages and disadvantages of this service? What are the benefits and consequences of genetic manipulation? Give at least one of each EVEN if you strongly believe in either the benefits or the negative consequences. What type of genetic manipulation, if any, do you believe should be allowed when conceiving/creating a child? Should parents be allowed to manipulate the sex of their baby, check and fix genetic disorders, choose eye color, create a "superbaby"? Why or why not? Do you think age should be a factor in deciding to have children? Should age, both young and old, considerations be made when considering conceiving a child? What about adopting children? Should laws be made regarding too young or too old for adoption qualifications? Should marital status matter? Please…
- Do you agree or disagree why? I think this topic is sort of tricky and I still can't decide if I feel like we should allow this. I think there many good pros as well as cons when it comes to changing a babies genes and traits. I understand why people would want to make sure their baby is born healthy and doesn't have any diseases like Alzheimers or Huntington's disease. At the same time, I am a big believer in the idea that everything happens for a reason so part of my feels like it is wrong to alter a baby because you never know what life could've been like. ( I hope what I am trying to say makes sense) There is also that risk of the baby getting more sick and other things happening which makes me feel like it is not worth the risk to alter them. In the article I read it mentions how this can make people superior to others which I also think will cause some problems in the future. What is preimplantation genetic testing? Give an example of a condition screened for? Do you agree with preimplantation screening and what are some of the ethical concerns surrounding the practice?1. What is the phenotype of the genetic disorder? 2. How does it express itself? 3. Does it cause you to be tall? 4. Your liver to function irregularly? 5. Do you feel no pain? 6. Are you born with extra teeth? 7. Does your body odor smell like maple syrup (maple syrup urine disorder)? 8.What does it do to you?
