Write the answers to the following questions. Make sure to bring two copies of
your solution to class. One you'll submit at the beginning of class and the other
you'll use during your class project. You are encouraged to work with other
students on your pre-project (but don't just copy their answers).
Note: a binary number is sometimes referred to as an unsigned binary
number.
1. As we saw in class, the range of a 4-bit binary number is 0000 to 1111 or in
decimal, 0 to 15. What is the range of a 3-bit binary number?
2. Convert (0101), to decimal.
3. Convert (0010), to decimal.
4. Using binary arithmetic, add (0101), and (0010), Convert the answer to
decimal and check if it is correct.
5. Using binary arithmetic, subtract (0010), from (0101), Convert the answer
to decimal and check if it is correct.
6. You can take the l's complement of a number by flipping every bit. So, a 0
→ 1 and 1 → 0. The l's complement of 0001 (1 in decimal) is 1110.
What is the 1's complement of 0010?
7. Using binary addition, add 0001 to your answer from problem 6.
