![Experiment Name: Speed of sound
Purpose of experiment: measurement the speed of sound from the sound waves
set up in the closed resonance tube.
Apparatus:
1- Closed resonance tube of variable length (see fig (1) below).
2- Meter scale.
3- Tuning forks of different frequencies.
4- Rubber pad.
5- Thermometer.
Method
1- Select the fork of highest frequency (512 Hz).
2- Strike it smartly on a rubber pad hold it over the mouth of the tube.
3- Adjust the shortest length of the resonance column until resonance occurs.
4- Measure the length of the air in the tube, L (see figure below).
5- Repeat the measurement two or three times and take the mean (LI).
6- Obtain different values of L using other forks (412 Hz......etc).
7- Measure the diameter of the tube to obtain its radius (r).
As shown in figure (1):
8- Record the room temperature.
9- Write your results in the table below
F (Hz)
L (cm)
1/F
(Le)=L+0,6 r
Where
L: Shortest resonance length of air column
Lc: Corrected length
