[An English physician and poet, born in Yorkshire; settled in London about 1691, where he was noted for his wit and colloquial powers; wrote “The Dispensary,” and other poems; knighted by George I.; died 1718.]
Dear gentlemen, let me die a natural death.
When he saw his physicians consulting together just before his decease. After receiving extreme unction he said, “I am going on my journey: they have greased my boots already.”Being once advised at a late hour at night to leave his club and visit his patients, he replied, “Nine of them have such bad constitutions, that all the physicians in the world cannot save them; and the other six have such good constitutions, that all the physicians in the world cannot kill them.”
