William Tyndale (c. 1490–1536)

Tyndale, William. The English translator of the Bible; born, probably in Gloucestershire, about 1490; strangled at the stake and his body burned near Brussels, Oct. 6, 1536. Much of his life was spent abroad. His version of the New Testament appeared in 1526; the Pentateuch in 1530. They form the basis of the Authorized Version of 1611.
