William Henry Seward (1801–1872)

Seward, William Henry. An American statesman; born in Florida, NY, May 16, 1801; died in Auburn, NY, 1872. In 1838 he was elected the first Whig governor of New York; in 1849 United States Senator, re-elected 1855. He was Secretary of State (1861–69) during the Civil War and through Johnson’s term. He published many of his speeches and addresses; a volume on the ‘Life and Services of John Quincy Adams’ (1849); and, with his adopted daughter Olive Risley Seward, ‘Travels Around the World’ (1873). His ‘Works,’ edited by Geo. E. Baker, appeared in 3 vols., 1853; 5 vols., 1884.
