Samuel Bowles (1826–1878)

Bowles, Samuel (bōlz). A noted American journalist; born at Springfield, MA, Feb. 9, 1826; died there, Jan. 16, 1878. He was editor and proprietor of the Springfield Republican (1844–78). He wrote: ‘Across the Continent’ (1865); ‘The Switzerland of America’ (1869); ‘Our New West’ (1869); etc. As one of the most able journalists in a land of journalism, his fame is both great and enduring.
