Saint Sidonius Apollinaris (431/2–c. 487)

Sidonius Apollinaris, Caius Sollius (431/2–c. 487 A.D.). A conspicuous man of affairs and of literary effort in the Roman Empire of the fifth century; bishop of Clermont, in Gaul. Of his work we have ‘Panegyrics’ of several emperors, and some poems, not valuable; and a collection of letters very valuable as a picture of provincial society just as the barbarians were overwhelming it.
