Philippe Quinault (1635–1688)
Quinault, Philippe (kē-nō’). A French dramatist; born in Paris, June 3, 1635; died on Nov. 26, 1688. His first play was produced at eighteen, and was successful. He obtained a literary pension, and was made a member of the Academy in 1670. He was a prolific writer, producing comedies, tragedies, and finally libretti for Lulli’s operas. It was in the latter work that he made his name. Among his chief works are: ‘La Mère Coquette,’ a comedy; ‘Armide’ and ‘Hys,’ operas.
