Marceline Desbordes-Valmore (1786–1859)
Desbordes-Valmore, Marceline (dā-bord”väl-mōr”). A French poet (1785–1859); born at Douai. She made her début at the age of sixteen in comic opera, but shortly after quit the stage. She wrote several volumes of poems: ‘Elegies and Romances’; ‘New Elegies and Poems’; ‘Tears’; ‘Poor Flowers’; ‘Bouquets and Prayers’; and ‘Poems of Childhood.’ Her most perfect song is perhaps ‘If He Had Known.’ She wrote also several stories.
