Léon Dierx (1838–1912)

Dierx, Léon (dē-r’). A French poet; born in the Isle of Reunion, 1838; died in 1912. He was educated for a civil service career, but devoted his highest capacities to verse. His maiden volume, ‘Aspirations’ (1858), sounds a new note; while ‘Closed Lips’ (1867) and ‘The Lovers’ (1879) maintained him in supremacy in the so-called “Parnassian” school.
