Juan Meléndez Valdés (1754–1817)
Meléndez Valdés, Juan, Don (mā-len’deth väl-dās’). A Spanish poet; born at Ribera del Fresno, March 11, 1754; died at Montpellier, France, May 24, 1817. He was professor of the humanities at Salamanca (1781); afterward entered public life; the lasting unpopularity incurred by siding with the French on their invasion of Spain forced him in 1811 into exile, where he died. He was one of the most prominent figures in Spanish literary life during the eighteenth century. Poetical works, best edition, Paris, 1820.
