John Pickering (1777–1846)

Pickering, John. An American philologist and Oriental scholar; born in Salem, MA, 1777; died in Boston, 1846. He published a paper on the ‘Adoption of a Uniform Orthography for the Indian Languages’ (1820); a ‘Vocabulary of Words and Phrases Peculiar to the United States’ (1816); a ‘Greek Dictionary’ (1826); and wrote many pamphlets on scientific and political questions.
