John Adams (1735–1826)
Adams, John. An eminent American statesman and publicist; second President of the United States; born at Braintree (now Quincy), MA, Oct. 19, 1735; died there, July 4, 1826. In the days preceding the outbreak of the Revolution, he frequently defended in the public prints the right of the colonies to throw off the English yoke. His most important contribution to the literature of the science of government is his ‘Defence of the Constitution and Government of the United States’ (1787). The ‘Familiar Letters’ of John Adams and his wife are of great value for the history of the American Revolution. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
