Georg Rudolf Weckherlin (15841653)
Weckherlin, Georg Rudolf (vek’hãr-lēn). A German poet; born at Stuttgart, about 1584; died at London, in 1653. He was essentially a court poet, and wrote only for the nobility. He was the first to introduce into German literature the ode, sonnet, eclogue, and epigram; his finest pieces are the ‘Love Songs to Myrta.’ He had his complete poetical works published twice at Amsterdam (2 vols., 1641, 1648).
