François Haverschmidt (Piet Paaltjens) (1835–1894)
Haverschmidt, François (häv’er-shmit) [“Piet Paaltjens”]. A Dutch prose- and verse-writer; born at Leeuwarden, Feb. 14, 1835; died at Schiedam, Jan. 19, 1894. He was pastor of “Reformed” churches in various parts of the Netherlands for some years. While still a student he produced a series of parodies, love songs, and sketches (called in collected form ‘Skits and Jests’), now known almost by heart to the whole Dutch collegiate world. Later he wrote realistic novels and tales of a somewhat serious tendency. Among them are: ‘My Brother’s House’; ‘The Pastorate of My Grandfather’; and various others.
