Fitzedward Hall (1825–1901)
Hall, Fitzedward. An American philologist; born in Troy, NY, March 21, 1825; died at Marlesford, England, Feb. 1, 1901. Settling in London in 1862, he accepted the chair of Sanskrit and Indian jurisprudence in King’s College. He was the first American to edit a Sanskrit text. Professor Hall discovered the supposed lost works: ‘Bhârata’s Nâtyasâstra,’ ‘Harshaacharita,’ and a complete copy of the valuable ‘Brihaddevatâ.’
