Charlotte Smith (1749–1806)

Smith, Charlotte (Turner). An English novelist; born in 1749; died in 1806. She wrote: ‘Elegiac Sonnets and Other Essays’ (1784); ‘Emmeline; or, The Orphan of the Castle’ (1788); ‘Ethelinde; or, the Recluse of the Lake’ (1789); ‘Celestina: A Novel’ (1791); ‘Desmond: A Novel’ (1792); ‘The Old Manor-House’ (1793); ‘The Emigrants: A Poem’ (1793); ‘Natural History of Birds’ (1807).
