Barthold Georg Niebuhr (1776–1831)

Niebuhr, Barthold Georg (nē’bör). A great German historian; born at Copenhagen, Aug. 27, 1776; died at Bonn, Jan. 2, 1831. His ‘Roman History’ (3 vols., 1811–32) marked a great advance in critical history-writing. Other works are: ‘Lectures on the History of Rome’ (2d English ed. 1850); ‘Lectures on Ancient History’ (3 vols., 1852); ‘Grecian Heroic History’ (1842); ‘Minor Historical and Philological Writings’ (2 vols., 1828–43).
