WHO taught thee first to sigh Alasse sweet heart?

VVho taught thy tongue to marshall words of plaint?

VVho fild thine eies with teares of bitter smart?

VVho gaue thee griefe and made thy ioyes so faint?

VVho first did paint with coullers pale thy face?

VVho first did breake thy sleepes of quiet rest?

VVho forst thee vnto wanton loue giue place?

VVho thrald thy thoughts in fancie so distrest?

VVho made thee bide both constant firme and sure?

VVho made thee scorne the world and loue thy friend?

VVho made thy mind with patience paines indure?

VVho made thee settle stedfast to the end.

Then loue thy choice though loue be neuer gained,

Still liue in loue, dispaire not though disdained.
