The book The Warrior Ethos, by Steven Pressfield depicts the warrior’s mentality from ancient times to the present through a variety of different aspects and stories. In The Warrior Ethos, Pressfield states that men are not born with the certain qualities that make a good warrior, but instead are inculcated through years of training and indoctrination, stating at an early age. He goes on to show how different societies have been able to instill the same or very similar ideals throughout history while maintaining their own unique characteristics. Things have changed from ancient Sparta where parents would be enthusiastic about their children going to war, and even more elated

Most militaries exhibit shame-based characteristics due to the fact that said characteristics are all required to run an organized and efficient military. Contrary to this, most civilian organizations are guilt-based, and rely on the individual’s fortitude and conscience to instill discipline in him/herself.
Another facet of the warrior ethos that Pressfield discusses is the brotherhood that all warriors share regardless of upbringing or personal beliefs. It is commonly known that military members who share harsh, traumatic, or even funny events become closer through the bond of a mutual experience. This is particularly true for Marine infantry; many of my Marine friends grew up in different areas of the US, with different values, ages, religious and political beliefs. However different we all might look on the outside, the fact that we’ve all been through good times and bad with each other makes us closer than any civilian could understand. After being a Marine, I find that I’m close to, and always will be, than my civilian friends who I’ve known for years. Along with this, Pressfield talks about how, under all the glory and allure of fighting for one’s country exists the real reason that warriors fight; for our brothers in arms. Political beliefs, government stances, and flags go out the window, only to be
I have yet to personally experience war, but I feel like I have experienced what the author talks about in forming a bond with fellow Marines through our shared Corps values.
Why after 50 years since the segregation of Central High School, do people of color still face challenges of racism? Long before the segregation of schools, people have faced many instances of discrimination because of the color of their skin. These same prejudice acts still continue today. This nation has yet created a workable plan for solving the gruesome acts of racism because of ineffective protesting, the influence societies have on individuals, and social media.
In her memoir Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba Pattillo Beals describes her experiences as she became one of the first nine black students educated in an integrated white school. She and her friends, who became known as the “Little Rock Nine”, elicited both support and criticism from their family members, friends, community members, military troops, in addition to the President of the United States. Melba’s experiences, while heartbreaking and sobering, highlight the strength to overcome that individuals can have over a system intent on keeping them down.
Patriot Games by Tom Clancy is a book about Jack Ryan who teaches at the US Naval Academy and is a former marine. He is in London giving a lecture when suddenly his whole life changes. Patriot Games teaches that anybody can be a hero.
Among the death and repulsion of war, there exists a single refuge for the warrior--his brethren. The success of combat is directly related to the morale of the soldiers, as it is the relationship with the neighboring soldier that demonstrates the motive for fighting. This association between men creates an abundance of
A warrior is defined as a “brave or experienced soldier or fighter.” These few words characterize some of the most valiant souls that have stepped on our planet. Whether they are the firefighters and police officers that fearlessly ran into the fire of the Twin Towers or the current marines that are stationed around the world, there is an abundance of warriors that surround us at every moment. In turn, the definition of warrior has changed through generations. During the medieval times, a typical warrior is a knight in shining armor fighting for his life and homeland. Today the definition warrior can be expanded as merely one who emits confidence and strives to make a difference in society. The essence of what it means to be a warrior is
In many societies both modern and past, warriors are often celebrated and their social ranking elevated above the average citizen. We see evidence of this in the history of the Aztec Empire where “The warrior was a glorified position in the society” (1). They were revered as having quality traits such as being brave, courageous and selfless to others. Other examples in history that hold the warrior on high are the samurai of feudal Japan, and the very similar knights of old England. Both of these titles had to be earned and bestowed upon an individual by a higher political power, usually Royalty or a Feudal Lord. Once given knighthood or the title of samurai, they would also own land and as such became respected members of their communities. In modern, more civilized times, the warrior is still present but there are other non-violent ways to showcase the skills of a warrior, we call them sports. Sports were created as a way to train and showcase a warrior 's skills with out having to risk his life in battle, and as such athletes today are celebrated in the same manner as the warriors of antiquity (2). Although sports were designed to showcase the skills and talents required for war, sadly it does not mean the end of war and as such, there are warriors today who put their lives on the line to defend or fight for the country they reside in, these are the men and women who serve in the military and after wards are given the title of veteran. If warriors are held in
There once was a group of distinctively talented warriors. They had just defeated their enemies at war. They were heading to town in their majestic horses. The town, Philly, was several days far by horse. They needed to go there to regain strength, get their gold and prepare for what might happen next. All the warriors were tired and sleepy. However, their leader Chuckle Berry always encourages them.
Many of us fine ourselves in a state of being "battle weary." I know I have. It begins with a good thing and a God thing to refute our enemies. Because of fear, lack of knowledge and misapplication of spiritual warfare strategies, we take on the war ourselves with an over zealous and presumptuous approach towards demonic spirits. What has happened is learned about all these spiritual warfare strategies, but we engaged in it without being prepared in our hearts. We claimed our righteousness of God in Christ. We hurled the blood of Jesus in the devils face without first applying the blood of Jesus to our own hearts and lives through confession and repentance.
With American so deep into the Cold War, it was unable to assess and recognize the problem that it had itself. Americans reacted to their problems by ignoring them and trying to compete socially with others countries. Following the end of the Second World War, American was the only country left, scattered from the horrors of the war. As Americans paraded throughout the streets, other countries were left cleaning up rubble. This sense of being virtually untouched gave Americans a great sense of pride- pride with which, along with other European countries, the American military was able to crush the Axis powers. However, America was heavily involved in the Cold War. The main idea of the Cold War involved two
Following orders is one of the most important things you do being in the Army, or any branch in the armed services, enlisted or reserve. Obedience is what enables the military to operate in an organized and effective manner which is clearly very important during challenging military situations. While many individuals can question the notion of obedience in daily their life, this luxury is often not available to us in the military, where the grand goals and aims require smooth internal functioning and coordination throughout the chain of command. Indeed, many of the standards that put up with and endure would be frowned upon outside the military, yet they are essential to our work's success within. For example, punishment is never really deemed to be a positive occurrence in an average person’s life, whereas in the military, it is meant to strengthen one's determination and instill discipline. It also enables a person to learn and fully take on the importance of following orders in. Not following orders is not an optional choice that we in the armed forces can make upon signing that contract. In fact, the act of the act of disobedience is considered to be an infraction and a person who placed himself in such a situation can find himself facing negative counseling statements, or smoking’s. Thus, respect and obedience is of the utmost significance in the military as it helps
Warriors are severe elite classes they are also exceedingly persistent and they do not give up as other classes do. Humanity with a warrior places a sword in hand during melee combat. Warriors are intensely trained with weaponry and that means there is a wide variety of weapons and tactics are available when you are a warrior. Warriors do not just go into battle, they face you head on after cautiously securing heavy armor and terrifying death machines. Warriors are heavily dependent on their armor and their weapons. To battle with a warrior
He expresses that Gregg Frikken, a 1st Class Sgt., developed a “sense of personal strength, appreciation for life and love of family…” due to his combat experiences. Although war has devastating and traumatizing effects on soldiers and people around the world, Gregg is exposing some of the good that comes from it, unlike most other media outlets. This article is a prime example that shows there are two sides to every story, and that something good always comes from something
Conscientious effort is required to develop and prepare Soldiers and Army Civilians to make right decisions and to take attendant actions (The White Paper, 2016). Leaders are in control of refining the quality of character instilled in Soldiers and DA civilians. How does the military as a whole directly guarantee proper character development to the force, you might ask? Or what should effective leaders do to indoctrinate Army values and characteristics within their ranks? They do so by teaching the Army values to every new recruits from day one of basic training as soon as they step off the bus. Collectively with the multitude of attributes given from our leaders through years of experience and ADRP 1/ADP 6-22; these values have established the groundwork for Soldiers to use as basis of what it is to be a person good character. After members absorb these values, their leaders certify devotion. Abiding to these ethics of the Army values embodies cohesion; it challenges the belief and self-confidence crucial to cooperation and mission success.
Since there had been humans on earth there has been disputes between clans, dynasty 's and religious interest all in an effort for one group to influence, control or possess the resources of another, so war is no new phenomenon. Actually, war was seen as a good thing as it was often seen as one of the main means in were Fathers saw a road in which their son would get the opportunity to earn the right of passage from a boy to a man—a “warrior”. That ancient ideology is not far off the path of the way we think today actually. The transformation adolescents to men and women is often realized in the corridors of war, especially if you come from a hardened military lineage where serving your country in uniform ceremonious event when one put down the toys and take the greater responsibilities of life, family and adulthood (Tick, 2005, pp.45-46).
