It was opened in 1959 and is situated in Malate, Manila. It is a popular destination choice for many because of its convenient location – it is located in the city which is accessible for many – and extremely affordable entrance fees. However, Manila Zoo has its fair share of issues. First, enclosures in Manila Zoo are old, rusty and too small for the animals. The cages that the monkeys are in are all worn-out, tattered and rust-colored. Although, there were very few monkeys in captivity, the cages still look like it would not be able to accommodate even one monkey due to its condition. The enclosure is not big enough for monkeys to roam around; the floor of the cage is also made from concrete which obviously does not resemble dirt and soil. The zoo’s main attraction, Mali – a 40 year old elephant – is housed in an enclosure too small for her. Like the monkeys’ cages, Mali’s pen has concrete flooring. It also lacks natural elements such as plants, trees, logs and such to resemble an elephant’s natural habitat. Mali’s pen looks very gloomy and boring. The tiger enclosures also look sad as its – yet again – concrete flooring is covered with dead leaves from dying trees. There were photos were posted in a destination review site by visitors wherein the tigers were pictured surrounded by trash while sleeping. Second, the animals’ health is in poor condition. Horses were pictured stick

Hancocks has improved zoos a lot so that the animals are more comfortable in their environment.
For many centuries, zoos have served as a way of both educating and entertaining various audiences around the world. However, many ethical and moral concerns have arisen recently regarding the manner in which the animals in these facilities are treated. Zoos disregard the rights of animals because the audiences and employees treat them poorly and animals are unable to thrive in the small enclosures. Journalist Michelle Carr is correct in her claim about the harsh reality of zoos. Even though authors Leslie Kaufman and John Pickrell are accurate when they claim that many zoos serve as educational and conservational institutions, this does not excuse the fact that zoos take advantage of animals in order to make money.
”(975). It is important to note that the increasing popularity of zoos as family-friendly suggests a growing trend that zoos are capable of offering all ages of education while ensuring wildlife

Humans like to be entertained regardless of how they are being entertained, whether that is walking through the park, watching a show, listening to music or simply going to the zoo. There is truth behind zoos that many don’t see, for example, many zoos don’t show the death rates that many zoo animals have after being transported from their natural habitants or the experiences that the zoo keepers provide to the animals being kept in captivity. To what extent are we okay with animals being tortured or being aware that animals are being killed just so humans can be entertained? While there are benefits to keeping animals in captivity, scholars agree that there are more negative effects that are damaging to the animals. The purpose of zoos can be more than just keeping animals in captivity and creating significant health or mental problems, zoos also can have a positive outcome, zoos can help keep endangered animals safe from others who are trying to kill them for what they are worth. Initially, zoos have improved a great deal over the last four thousand years. They do not have any more cages or steel bars. They have continuously tried to provide exceptional and friendlier environments for these wild animals.
Zoos are many things. It can be a place for family fun and a good place to visit over the weekend, yet there are so many things going on inside zoos that the public fails to notice. For example, the article “10 Facts about Zoos” by CAPS discusses the lack of enclosure space and states, “Tigers and lions have around 18,000 times less space in zoos than they would in the wild. Polar bears have one million times less space.” This reveals that animals in zoos are placed in enclosures that are way too small for them and not even remotely close to what they experience in the wild. “Elephants are used to roaming miles upon miles a day in large groups, yet in zoos they
Zoos present a certain blend of nature and culture. They have always provided a way to bring natural wildlife and urban Americans together as a means of entertainment. Yet, throughout the years the role of zoos have changed. Though once used for amusement, zoos are now being used for education on preservation and the welfare of endangered species. Zoos are very helpful for both the public and for the animals. Some animal’s’ lives depend on the help from the zoo. While caring for the animals, they are also making the public aware of what they are doing and teaching the public about the animals. The world needs zoos; they are very beneficial with hardly anything against
In roughly 1970 zoos started to become more caring for the animals needs. When designing an exhibit modern zoos start with the most basic stuff like where should the feeders and waterers go and how many there should be. Next, they focus on things that are stimulating for the animals like toys and trees so they don't die of boredom. Exhibits also have to be designed for the keeper, they spend most of their time in there taking care of the animal so it should be easy for the zookeeper. Most exhibits are designed now like the habitats are like in the wild.

The Romans is the example that Jamieson uses, the Romans “kept animals in order to have living fodder for games.” Jamieson continued to explain how over the years the use of animals historically grew in popularity and how the idea continued to “thrive until at least the eight century.” Jamieson also mentioned that keeping a large amount of animals showed who had power.

Zoos are terrible places for animals that do not belong in cages. Zoos include roadside zoos, petting zoos, and smaller animal exhibits. The animals they have are meant to be out in the wild not locked up in cages. The areas are not big enough for them to be animals. They are held in captivity with nowhere to go because if they try to break out, they are going to get shot down. Animals are not meant for entertainment. If you want to see an animal there are many websites with live cameras in order to see it. Also, if you want to see animals the animals should have a free range area and the people ride around in cars to look. The people should take the chances of getting beaten, eaten, trampled, etc. Zoos make money off poor animals who have no choice
Since approximately 1250 B.C., ancient Egyptians had created and practiced the capture and display of animals in what are now known as zoos (Fravel). Records describe such exotic animals as birds, lions, giraffes, and tigers in captivity (Fravel).
