Robert Zemeckis Beowulf movie version earned his knowledge from his own mistakes, then he lied to the king about grendel's mother. But he said that he killed him, but the queen knew that he was lying and knew about him laying with grendel’s mother. But he said that he killed and was exaggerating her death by making a story, but the queen didn't believe it. Then later on in the movie he gets visited by his son that he made with grendel's mother. when it was time to fight the dragon he told Wealtheow that he did not want to be remembered as a king or a hero but as a man. But what he said was that he did not want to be remembered as a person who ruled or killed many beasts or a person with riches, but for the mistakes he made and how …show more content…
Then noticed that both have a very powerful meaning the Robert Zemeckis has the meaning of responsibilities and how beowulf figured out how to try and fix what the had done while the was king and what the had to do in order to gain his honor back by killing the dragon that the released and was able to kill the dragon by cutting his arm off and ripping it out with his bear hands. Then there's the burton raffel's version that beowulf was finding someone who can kill the dragon and was able to fight but ended up getting killed by a different cause.
My thesis is important because this is what i think and is my own opinion that both stories have differences and both have different aspects and different cultures by a christian and a viking aspect and different ways of telling the stories. But both are very good but i prefer the Robert Zemeckis because it has a little more understanding and has more details to it with a video that shows different events that happened and actually shows how brutal beowulf is when it comes to killing the monsters and how hyped he gets will he gets a taste of victory or taking
Beowulf is an old Anglo-Saxon story of a terrifying monster Grendel, Grendel travels to the Danes mead hall Heorot and while the danes expect it least he attacks killing countless men purely for the joys of doing so. Hrothgar king of the Danes calls for a warrior to fight this unruly beast. After 12 long years of grendel attacking Hrothgar's calls are answered and the great warrior Beowulf comes to kill Grendel. Beowulf travels to the land of the Danes from across the seas and in the first night he kills Grendel. Sadly for Beowulf Grendel has a mother that now seeks revenge for her son's death and Beowulf is asked to kill Grendel’s mother as well. Beowulf goes to where Grendel’s mother is staying and battled her to the death , Beowulf wins
Although both books are written about similar topics, it is expression that separates the two. In the novel “Beowulf” by Seamus Heaney, and in the novel “Grendel” by John Gardner, both books explore what it means to recreate ancient english stories. By reading Beowulf or Grendel, one can distinguish the literary difference in each book when it comes to style of writing, format, and common elements in each book, therefore causing the reader to compare the overall purpose of each book.
Beowulf is about a warrior who fights a huge monster to show his loyalty to a king that was not even his. It was written in the Anglo-Saxon time period and this greatly affects the way the story is written. Grendel is written from the monster's point of view and this was written many years later.
Beowulf is one of the oldest poems in history, it was originally written in Anglo-Saxon, and it was told orally with many literary devices so it could be remembered throughout generations. It shows what their society was based on back in the Anglo-Saxon era. Although throughout history the poem has been changed to fit our modern day society. For example, having different values and morals and how we look at religion has all changed. In the Beowulf poem and movie there are many similarities and differences in Religion, Characterization, and Morals it highlights the value and beliefs of each society.
To explain, the film shows the better side of Buliwyf, the nobel and slightly more nobleman side of him. It shows him fighting to protect his people of the kingdom. In the poem, Beowulf is fighting for glory, fame, rewards or the ladies. He wants to be self-centered and he uses his abilities for his own well being, not for the good of others. Another major difference between the poem and film is the plot. In the poem, Beowulf went to the Danes land to defeat a monster named Grendel. However, in the film, Buliwyf goes out to defeat a race, not a single being and its mother, the race of wendols. Although the main characters are different in some ways, the central idea never
Showing heroism and unmatched fearlessness , Beowulf manages to avoid death and end Grendel's mother's life once and for all and her minion lake beasts, and in the process and defeating the fiend, he beheads the matriarch to boast as a trophy to the people of Hrothgar. This may be a sign of greed for fame because this act was completely pointless and selfish. He wanted to do this just to make himself feel like more of a King, he wanted the attention of every body focused on him and he wanted the glory of being the master monster slayer. In the final battle against the massive dragon, the readers see the same Beowulf just decades later. Beowulf only takes a handful of men with him to the sight of the battle, and before the battle he boasts for the final time. In an act of brave stupidity, Beowulf tells his soldiers that he would enter the dragon's hideout alone, knowing the danger that awaits
(Robert Zemeckis, 2007), the story is slightly changed. He lives his life a lie after “killing” grendel's mother. He dies also killing the dragon but the dragon is his son, he dies trying to end a curse of sorts. When Beowulf does die he gains redemption also. In a way, Beowulf gains fake honor and glory because the people didn’t know that he did not kill Grendel’s mother. The only people who knew were Beowulf’s wife and Wiglaf later in the film.
The importance of the sword in both stories plays a major role in the development of the character traits of each hero. In the epic “Beowulf”, there are two important swords, Hrunting given to Beowulf by Unferth, a coward, and the
The story of Beowulf is a story not everyone has gotten the chance to enjoy, however Beowulf has been represented in different works of literature that most of us have been exposed to throughout our lives. Beowulf was a noble Anglo-Saxon hero who was never afraid of any challenge. Many may compare him to a god due to his power and bravery, but some may compare him to a superhero that are shown in movies today. The old english poem Beowulf is about a young Geatish warrior who goes to help the King of the Danes, Hrothgar, who was wounded while being terrorized by a monster named Grendel. Traits like bravery and strength are brought to the surface when Beowulf slays both Grendel and Grendel’s antagonistic mother. One of the many superhero films
Overall, the purpose of each book is drastically different than the other. Beowulf is the oldest piece of writing in the English language, and before
Beowulf Comparison Essay The movie tends to change the roles of the characters compared to the poem. Beowulf is a hero that helped kill Grendel and his mother, who has been terrorizing Hrothgar and his thanes. He was a respectable, honorable and brave man to his people. Although the movie and poem share many similarities, the different portrayals of their interpretation on a hero, different roles women and men play, and the role of religion divulges the values of the societies in which they are told.

For this assignment I have decided to compare and contrast Beowulf literature to Beowulf the movie. I thought that actually watching the movie Beowulf would bring to light some of the reasoning of the poem but it did a better job of confusing me. The movie varies greatly from the poem and may have made me lose what little understanding I began with.
The poem Beowulf, written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet and the movie script, written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. The story is about a Man named Beowulf, who becomes a hero to his town Heorot, by defeating a monster named Grendel. He is later named King of Geats, because of his braveness and loyalty to his people. After about fifty years of ruling, a dragon threatens the town’s people. Beowulf and his servant, Wiglaf, set off to defeat this dragon. While he did succeed to kill it, sadly Beowulf dies in the process. In the poem versus the movie, Beowulf shows different character traits throughout the story. Heroism, loyalty, and bravery all differ from the poem to the movie. The audience will perceive Beowulf as a completely different person if only looking at one of the two pieces.
Beowulf was a selfish character, which truly led to his own demise. Beowulf’s boasts put him in a hypocritic situation because he is only doing the noble deeds for his own fame and fortune. He ensues his perusal of honorability through Hrothgar’s noble words, “Ward and guard it, for it is the greatest of houses. Be on your mettle now, keep in mind your fame, beware of the enemy. There’s nothing you wish for that won’t be yours if you win through alive,” (45). Beowulf knew that he would be recognized beyond comprehension if he fulfilled his first boast of killing Grendel. This fame that would come to him was his greatest motivation and it became more clear as the text progressed. Beowulf is bolstered with gifts after his first two boasts were fulfilled and it corrupts him, “You have won renown: you are known to all men far and near, now and forever. Your sway is wide as the wind’s home, as the sea around cliffs. And so, my prince, I wish you a lifetime’s luck and blessings to enjoy this treasure,” (87). Beowulf receives great treasure and wealth for the completed tasks. The treasure is taken in by him freely, he feels as if he deserves the prizes fully. The power given to him is beyond comprehension and his greatest motivation was fulfilled. After becoming so powerful, the need to prove himself was not as grand anymore. Once Beowulf realizes this power inside him, his
