The Pros and Cons of Youth Sports In many schools around the world, children and teens are starting to compete in sports. Whether it is one sport or 4, almost all are always playing sports. Kids and teens tend to play sports outside of school. However, most schools offer certain programs, clubs, or teams play sports. All Hillsborough schools offer at least one program for sports that any kid or teen can attend. But is youth sports good for our students? Competing in sports at a young age can have it's pros, but can sometimes result in some cons that might make the child drop out of the sport. Before sports, the kids might be lacking in discipline and motivation to do anything, acting very immature. However, the coach/instructor doesn't go well with an undisciplined kid that won't listen to anything an adult says. The coach will work the kid countless times until they understand the “rules” of being a kid/teen. The parents will most likely see a major attitude change in their kid after they put them in the sports. This results in a stronger bond between the parent and the child, a very beneficial thing for the child. If there is a strong bond between them, there is more trust to do more things that they probably weren't able to do. To sum it up, youth sports is beneficial to kids because it teaches them important life skills, help them stay active, and mature them at a faster pace. The problem with a very competitive mindset is that rush of adrenaline, and then the kid doesn't realize that they have gotten hurt. Youth sports is a common source of injuries for kids, and that isn't good for their bodies. Kids are still at a developing age, where nothing isn't fully developed until you are 25. For example, it is very common for kids to get concussions in sports like basketball, soccer, taekwondo, etc. If a kid gets more than one concussion, it really isn't good for them. Multiple concussions result in permanent brain damage instead of just a dizzy feeling. At such a young age, it really isn't ideal to get that badly hurt. Another example would be hurting muscles and breaking bones. Bones and muscles usually heal on their own, but they can also result in permanent damage. For example, I have numerous friends that have injuries because of their sports. One has had 4 concussions, another and permanently hurt his knee. A point of disagreement among the people whose youth play in competitive sports, is that some think they are too dangerous because the youth can get many injuries that can change their life forever. But on the other hand people think that it is a way to learn life skills and have great confidence, because they will need to know those simple key skills when they are out in the real world and have a job. First, youth sports help develop character and confidence in children. In the article “Are High School Sports Good For Kids?” it states “... develop good citizens through interscholastic activities which provide equitable opportunities, positive recognition and learning experiences.” Another reason is that it creates more rewarding friendships. As it states in the News article “Kids and Sports” by CBS News “... Having athletic confidence helps a child greaty and it doesn't have to be a team sport or a high pressure one either.” This tells us that if your children are in sports it will benefit them as they get older and when they are adults they will be prepared more than people who didn’t participate in sports.
Sports can be viewed as a learning environment that helps individuals learn life lessons, foster strong work habits and develop core values all the while learning a sport skill. Youth sports that truly benefit young athletes should be structured to emphasize participation more than just competition. Children enjoy a sport more when they are able to have fun (Humpries). Despite many excesses some sport programs still manage to promote important virtues like self- confidence, teamwork, personal responsibility, coping skills, and persistence. Through sports kids can learn to stay organized and learn how to prioritize (Ferguson). Sports enables development of physical skills and increasing proficiency makes kids feel good about themselves. It teaches kids that failure is something to overcome and and not to fear (Meyerhoff 8-9). Youth sports has many aspects that are truly benefiting for children, but these benefits are slowly being clouded by the negatives that are prominent in today's youth sports.
First of all sports keep our youth out of trouble. “Sports lead to less smoking, drug use, pregnancy, and risky sex”(“Active Kids Do”). Sports lead to less of all these things because most high school sports have a two hour practice 4 - 5 times a week plus a game so, in doing that it gives less time for our youth to be caught up in illegal activities. Also kids will have to feel the rave of the coach if they get in trouble because that usually means they can’t play a game and the whole team is depending on them. All in all sports help kids stay out of trouble.
I must admit, youth sports do provide some good advantages to participating in them. Especially over the past few years, many studies have proved or disproved the idea that sports are beneficial for young kids. Those studies have found that youth sports have both positive and negative effects on young children, and research shows parents and coaches have the greatest effect on a child’s experience.
Many children are losing time with family to play and train for sports. Parents are putting more and more money into sports each year, this pressures the child to like and play that sport for a long time. If you let your child play competitive sports he or she may be under a lot of pressure or become prone to sports related injuries and burnout.
Today’s youth is our society’s future, which is why it is important to keep them safe and out of harm’s way. Children and teens who get into trouble are more likely to continue doing so as they reach adulthood. It is important to give children an alternative extra-curricular activity than hanging out with their friends unsupervised with peer pressure all around them.
