Reflection Assignment - Sexting and Youth I believe the discussion surrounding sexting and youth presented my best work within the discussion component of this course. This topic in itself really interested me because I’ve seen the negative impacts that sexting can have on young individuals when I myself was in high school. I began the week only really viewing sexting as a fully negative thing to do when individuals are young, but by the end of the week I grew to have a more complex opinion and I believe that came from properly participating in the discussion and truly taking an interest in the topic. Thanks to Sondra I learned all about the legalities surrounding youth sexting, or rather, that Canada does not technically have any specific …show more content…
A classmate, Nicholas had brought up the fact that adolescence is an extremely vulnerable stage in life where teenagers just want to feel accepted and loved. He mentioned that peer pressure, along with the desire to feel loved, may be a possible reason for youth sexting. He then mentioned that youth are impulsive and that they do not think of the negative consequences of their actions. After reading his post, I recalled a term I had learned called the invincibility principle. The invincibility principle consists of youth believing that they are the main focus of everyone around them causing them to continue their egocentric thinking until they believe that they are extremely unique, that laws don’t apply to them and that they are ultimately invulnerable to any consequences of risky behaviour (Elkind, 1970 as cited in Vickman, Anderson & Smith Greenberg, 2008). I then discussed how I believed that this concept could potentially be a reason that youth participated in sexting. I believe that bringing up the invincibility principle furthered Nicholas’ knowledge and as well as solidified his previous reasons on why young individuals

Rachel has a cognitive disability and she might not know what she’s doing by sexting the male inappropriate things.
One serious issue is sexting, Sexting among teens is not only illegal, but harmful and dangerous among the sender and the receiver. Both are held responsible for child pornography and can be dealt serious consequences. Sexting causes an increase in teen suicides, anxiety self-esteem and involves pressure meaning another forum cyberbullying. Exposing these pornographic photos will not only stress the deliverer but lead to sexual harassment in conclusion.
I gather this because evidence has been shown that teenager’s brains are impetuous and impulsive. In the article “Teenage Brains are Malleable and Vulnerable, Researchers Say”, by Jon Hamilton, readers can see that in paragraph 4 it states, “studies suggest that adolescent brains are ‘wired’ to engage in risky behavior”. These activities include drugs, unsafe sex, and drinking. Obviously, teenagers are drawn towards these acts while knowing that they are morally and ethically wrong. In “Romeo and Juliet”, the readers see actions of “love” between the two star-crossed soulmates. The audience
If a text includes a message that is intended to persuade, induce, entice or coerce a minor to produce a lewd or indecent image, that text is also a felony violation of laws regarding the sexual exploitation of a child. This is true even if both the sender and the recipient are minors. Another possible misconception is the belief that receiving an unsolicited sext image from a minor is not a violation, since it is not possible to know in advance whether a text includes an inappropriate image. The image should be deleted as soon as it is received, otherwise the recipient is in violation of the possession clause of the
The term "statutory rape" is defined as “sexual relations between an underage minor female and an adult male or vice versa” (Criminology: The Core). Individuals that engage in sexual activity should be at the age of consent. The age of consent varies by state laws and the legal ramifications for breaking this law is set in accordance with their ethical standards. The age of consent law even considers sexual relation between a minor and adult that is non-violent or unforced to be statutory rape.
Nothing drives emotions out the window more than hearing about innocent children being used for sex. In Cambodia, sex trafficking has grown into a troublesome issue. Sex trafficking has become one of the fastest growing crimes occurring internationally. It is the third largest crime-business in the world, after drugs and arms trafficking. Women, girls, and even men and boys are victims of the billion-dollar sex trafficking industry. Sex trafficking occurs everywhere, and it is not culturally specific, but a gender specific issue. There are numerous cases of sex trafficking within Cambodia, however child sex trafficking is extremely captivating and distressing to learn about.
Statutory rape laws assume that a person is not capable of consenting sex. Even if a person consents the law of sex assume that they do not have the capacity to consent. statutory rape is different from child molestation as there is not force. Marriage is excluded from the law as an older individual is able to marry someone who is under age as long they obtain consent from their parents. Andre clark discussion of california’s statutory rape laws demonstrates the distinctions made for marriage in the law as statutory rape is described as an ‘’act of sexual intercourse intercourse accomplished with a female not the wife of the perpetrator, where the female in under the age of 18 years’’ (P.1933). Statutory rape laws can also serve to protect those who are mentally incapacitated and be may be at a developmental age lower than their actual age however this can be difficult to prove. While statutory rape laws are currently in place to protect minors
The accusation of statutory rape can insult both parties involved when the case is of a completely consensual & committed relationship. Since the year 2003 the legality is expected to be easily understood, if one person isn’t giving consent, with the capacity to do so, and the other involved does not think there’s consent, that is an offence. So when two people in a committed relationship are being punished for something that any other normal couple could do without such extreme consequences, is the statutory rape law really just?
In Sympathy, a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar, the narrator speaks of his feelings that sympathize with how a caged bird feels and why he does what he does in his cage. The author uses style to convey the theme of oppression and imprisonment and the tone of pain and agony through the use of imagery, diction, and repetition.
Seven-year-old Megan Kanka was sexually assaulted and killed by Jesse Tim Medequas a released sex offender along with two other ex-offenders (Winick and La Fond, 213). Megan's parents and the community were extremely angry at the fact that they did not receive any type of notification that a released sex offender especially a violent one was living amongst them. In 1996 in New Jersey, Megan's Law implemented guidelines for sex offender registration and nationally mandated notification systems be implemented across the states to notify communities of sex offenders living among them. The registry requires all sex offenders to register their personal information such as their name, address, and crime. The notification system requires police

It's not uncommon for middle school and high school students to develop a "personal fable." Such a fable is a common teen and older tween belief that arises from adolescent egocentrism, which develops between the ages of 11 and 13. Some research has shown that belief in the personal fable and one's invulnerability is directly connected to common adolescent risk-taking behaviors such as promiscuous or unprotected sex, use of alcohol or illicit drugs, and physically dangerous acts, such as driving without a license or driving recklessly or while intoxicated. Colloquially, these individuals are known as "special snowflakes." In other words, the adolescent thinks that since others are so obviously fascinated by him (adolescent egocentrism), he
Social media has become an outlet for teenagers to communicate constantly, monitor each other’s lives, and control what they want others to see. As social media is becoming more and more popular, more teenage moral panics are occurring. A moral panic is defined as the “fear of a new technology’s or cultural form’s negative impact outside of parental control.” (Jackson) Throughout these past few years, there have been an endless amount of teenage moral panics. Snapchat is an application that has caused a great amount of controversy. With the Snapchat application, you get to control how long the person you send a photo to can view that photo before it disappears. The problem with this is that you can take a snapshot of the photo before it disappears. Snapchat has become to be a teenage moral panic; more specifically Snapchat “sexting”, which is “the act of sending sexual messages and pictures to another person through phones or the internet.”(Klower) On Snapchat parents cannot control what their teenagers are sending and to who their teenagers are sending pictures and videos to. Therefore, teenagers feel a sense of privacy, and use the application to sext, which can lead to various negative behaviors.
In an era where internet and social media dominate, there must be a consideration of legal issues concerning privacy rights. But where is the line drawn when it may be associated with the sexual exploitation of youth? R. v. Barabash, 2015 SCC 29 [Barabash] is a circumstantial case that centres on concerns of privacy rights involving private use, child pornography, as well as regarding the establishments of exploitation and consent. Barabash involved two fourteen year old girls who were runaways, dependant on drugs and involved in prostitution. According to Statistics Canada (2008) at the time of this case, youth aged 12 to 14 were twice as likely to experience sexual violence then that of young adults, this statistic was even higher if the victim is female (Sexual Assault, para. 4). While they were staying with two significantly older men they were involved in sexual activity that was videotaped and photographed. Under s.163.1(2) of the Criminal Code the men were charged for making child pornography as well as the older man was charged with possession of child pornography under s. 163.1(4). While the trial judge found all elements of the offences were established, the accused raised in defence the private use exception outlined in R. v. Sharpe, 2001 SCC 2 [Sharpe], which the judge failed to disprove beyond a reasonable doubt. Through theoretical and legal frameworks this paper will analyze the defence of private use through objective analysis with reference to
