1. For a large portion of the essay, it does consist of negative descriptions of what the “average American.” We as American do stereotypical carry stereotypes that gives a negative portrayal of the U.S. through the media, public opinions, etc. The negative stereotypes of American within this essay paints us as idiots, obese, sociopaths, racist, and hoteps. However, to a certain extent I do agree to Young’s depiction of the typical American. Today, many of us face racists and this country is plagued with obesity. Nonetheless, I do not believe that Young gave an accurate depiction of all Americans. 2. Young’s description of the Obamas as a black family contradicts the images and the stereotypical portrayal of black families. The black family
In Edward L. Hudgins article, What is an American?, Hudgins defines an American in ways I had not thought of before. Hudgins stated all these ideas about Americans being driven to do their best and meeting challenges head-on. I would like to think that being an American means everything Hudgins stated, however I think Hudgins is giving the optimistic answer of what being an American means. What Hudgins explains as being an American is what I believe most Americans were like when the country was first founded. The idea of taking risks and working until the risks paid off is one that most Americans do not believe because the possibility of actually achieve one’s dream is extremely less likely today than it was when the country was first established.
Obama’s speech demonstrates certain points to engage the audience and to create a connection to emphasize its presence in the speech. One impactful technique he used is his anecdotes to prove his credibility to gain trust within the students. One anecdote that he clearly states is about African Americans are treated different decades ago and how certain races are not able to have the job they wanted, due to their skin tone. Furthermore, he adds his own research on this topic by explaining how “no blacks CEOs of Fortune 500 companies” (Mccaskill). This creates a sense of wisdom and satisfaction because, over time, society changed their views within people of color
To accomplish the purpose, she has strongly used the power of persuasion to appeal to her audience’s reasoning and emotions. She has strongly stirred emotions by introducing the factor of Obama’s upbringing and family background. By claiming to only belong to the black community, he disowns the white mother who gave birth to him and raised him, and the grandparents who brought him up. The article also introduces the aspect of Obama’s half-sister, a multiracial, though of a different racial mix. By doing this, the author evokes emotions that would deter any individual against such
In the essay Why Obama Should Not Have Checked “Black” On His Census Form, the author Elizabeth Chang informs the readers of the importance of racial labels. Chang was disappointed that Obama put African American on his census form when he had the chance to put anything he wanted. Obama affects the rest of the country, and Chang believes that Obama could have changed society’s opinion on multiracial people. The reason Chang believes Obama should have put something other than black on his census form, is because he is a person people look up to.
These images display a consistent lack of sympathy for blacks. Here he shows an attractive and wealthy, slave-owning white family, including a husband, his wife, and their two children. The young daughter plays with a lean greyhound which stands before them. Black stereotypes evolved as they did not fit into the free market success.
successful. He uses literary devices such as ethos, and an analogy in expressing his views. Gates
Elizabeth Chang’s perspective of Obama is filled with hope and progressive movement for America, since he became the missing piece to help our country become accepting of diversity. She starts off appealing to the readers ethics, which in turn helps persuade the readers. “I knew Obama self-identifies as African American, but I was disappointed when I read that’s what he checked on his census(Chang 330).” Saying this, she lets the audience realize that Obama’s morality does not include pride. Though people believes he is only African American, he should be proud of being more than one race. By the author stating an opinionated statement, it makes the reader think about how the simplest thing can affect the world in a big way, and shows that
In society, majority of African Americans are portrayed as being related to negative figures. African Americans are portrayed as having low income, being obnoxious, or living this low lifestyle compared to other ethnicities. In the 2004 comedy “Soul Plane”, all three of these examples are shown through a Caucasian family of four; a husband, wife, son, and daughter.
He acknowledges that the resentments of the black and white communities “aren’t always expressed in polite company,” but these resentments are manifested within our society in destructive ways, like racism (Obama, par. 31). The audience feels that he is knowledgeable and credible on the immediate topics affecting our future and our daily lives.
President Obama appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos to get his message about racism across to his audience. Throughout his speech, the President refers to the
The election of President Obama marks the most noteworthy political accomplishment for African Americans in the United States during the post-civil rights revolution, thus bringing about a change in the country’s social and political landscape that was steeped in racial discrimination since the founding of this great nation. Because social and political conditions are subject to constant change, President Obama’s
He shows this through an Allusion by the History of African Americans. He is showing history and culture by talking about the African Americans and their role in society. This can be a sensitive topic because he talks about how they can be excluded from multiple things. Therefore this does not stop him from continuing his speech about Black families.Seeing them struggle with supporting their family due to race or color. Racism has always been a problem, but Barack Obama does a good job to try to solve and sort out the problems need to continue to have a better but not perfect world. He has a good connection with the audience and we'll explanation on how to Improve the country, by solving the issues needed.”A lack of economic opportunity among black men”. Michelle Obama is the topic of this research for she is a role model and inspiration to Americans across the nation. Michelle’s life has shown nothing but mere dedication, outstanding perseverance, a willingness to learn, affect change and be a leader to those who believe and admire her work. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, Obama is the daughter of Fraser Robinson III, a city water plant employee and Democratic precinct captain (Slevin, 2015). During her early years, Michelle has seen the detrimental effects segregation can have on a community, which was later reflected on her fight against inequality. Being raised on the
Obama recalled the summer when his mother and sister came to visit him in New York. Instead of enjoying the process of hearing their conversations about their adventures, Obama would prefer them to know the problems and the politics of the city. One evening, Obama, his mother and his sister went out to watch a movie called Black Orpheus. The depiction of the movie made his mother realized some of the things she did not have growing up as a child. Before his mother and sister left the city, Obama came to their place. His mother notice a letter addressed to his father. Hence, she began to explain about the reason his father left. She didn’t blame his father for anything. Obama claimed the innocence his mother carried on her first date with his father would transfer into something firmer. A few months later, Obama’s father died. He neither went to the funeral nor felt pain. The only thing he felt was a “vague sense of an opportunity lost”. Later, Obama remembered one night when he
According to the first text, “Black is being seen in a whole new light” written by Yolanda Young, the African American’s conditions are much better now. Yolanda Young explains that the election in 2008 changed the way American people looked at African Ameri-cans. She states that the reason for this is because of the black president and his black wife. Primarily she is happy for the changes, but she still thinks that there are room for improvements.
