Sports Performance or Skill Performance Stress
In a world filled with mental, emotional, and physical pressures, it can be difficult to find balance. However, it is crucial to not let stress become overwhelming, as it can quickly interfere with sports and skill performances if given the chance. The first part of not letting stress dominate is understanding it and related concepts, such as the Yerkes-Dodson Law. The second part is utilizing stress-reducing techniques such as meditation and t'ai thi ch’uan. The two together work to significantly reduce the role negative stress plays one’s life.
At first, the Yerkes-Dodson Law seems counterintuitive. The law states that until a certain point, increased stress will help with a performance. After that critical threshold(which varies), stress will begin to impair that same performance. It is posited that the stress initially helps as it creates motivation and willpower, but then becomes overwhelming. It was discovered in 1908 when psychologists Robert Yerkes and John Dillingham Dodson found that mild electrical shocks could motivate rats to complete a maze, but when the electrical

Health-wise, tai chi has earned a reputation as a stress reduction technique for its gentle, flowing, movements with an emphasis on focus and deep breathing. This is helpful for lessening stress as a singular focus can cause nonessential worries to melt away. It also helps to reduce more important stresses by maintaining calm through deep breathing and providing endorphins(which cause feelings of happiness) through gentle exercise. This technique can provide space for better focus and relaxation by pushing away negative pressure. Performing this activity before stressful activities such as public speaking clears the clutter of the mind and allows one to be their best
In the article “Playing With Pain” by Michelle Crouch, published by Scholastic SCOPE, in December 2015 and January 2016, is about how when you specialize in one sport, you put a lot pressure on yourself to do well and be the best you can be, but some consequences can be life changing.
With the play Baby in the bathwater by Christopher Durang, you can find within the story the dark humor of some very serious situations. The author uses it to bring a little fun and light to the life of Daisy and her parents. It has twisted situations at goes throughout the whole play from calling the baby a baked potato to the dog eating the baby. I can honestly say I would love to meet the person who wrote this just to get into his mind of what he was thinking at the time.
As a former Army Soldier, I know that life is full of stress and stressors that can have an impact on my life. In fact, I believe as a Soldier, you can have an additional form of stress known as combat stress that can produce long term effects to your health and well-being. I retired from the Army in 2009 after deploying six times to various combat zones and dealt with other stressors that you have in the Army. I believe that I have some effects from the stress that I endured while in a combat zone. Finding ways to deal with stress without going and asking for help through meditation and relaxation exercises would be beneficial to me, so that I don’t have to turn to someone for help. Besides combat stress or related stress, I also have the stress that everyone in life endures. My top stressors are that of work in my current job, family life to include extended family, finances, continuing my education, and lastly combat stress from when I was on active duty. According to the Mayo Clinic in an article from mayoclinic.org titled Healthy Life Styles Stress Management, “Stress might be affecting your health without you even realizing it.” In this paper I will answer the questions like, what causes this stress. Is it time management? I believe what causes a lot of this stress is not having enough time in the day to do it all the things you want or need to do without causing a negative feelings or anger. In this, I
Despite a great number of physical activities benefits in stress relief, it is difficult to implement it in an effective way. Firstly, the stress relief effect of a certain type of physical exercise may vary based on individual’s differences. The body may react differently in different age group, gender, income level, culture, education level and other segments parameter. Secondly, the lack of consistency makes the effect difficult to be maintained and the stress hence may rebound quickly. Therefore, the physical exercises need to be tailored regard to the different stressor. For example, high-energy and competitive type of exercise would be suitable for those who cannot directly express their anger emotion to colleagues and
The Healthcare Industry has focused significant attention to the issue of stress, and members of the helping profession have initiated a vast array of therapeutic scenarios and approaches to assist clients in multiple situations in which stress negatively impacts an individual’s health. Self-care and self-help techniques span all forms of health care to include Ayurveda and Alternative medicine, with one common goal…to help individuals cope with and alleviate stress and its negative effects. How to Stop Worrying and Start Living is a timeless classic and a must read, because it was written in easy to understand language with fundamental facts that everyone should know about worry and offers techniques on how to understand the source of worry. Carnegie offers suggestions on how the reader can cultivate a mental attitude that will bring peace and happiness into the reader’s life while tackling worries head-on and quickly. Carnegie recommends the anticipation of problems and planning for them rather than allowing oneself to worry. Among other suggestions for alleviating worry, Carnegie further expands on the importance of learning to accept constructive criticism
If a large majority of individuals view stress as their enemy, this can severely take a toll on their health throughout their lifetime, and even cause their life to be shortened prematurely. As the lecture illustrates, 43 percent of people who believe stress as harmful had an increased risk of dying. An obstacle or barrier that might hinder this improvement would be human nature, because it’s easy for human to get stressed and be clouded with thoughts to be able to solve the issue of handling stress. On the other hand, to solve the obstacles the society needs to be educated on how to make stress their friend. Also, introducing mechanism within their life to reduce stress, and urge others to see stress as a positive thing rather than a negative. Thus causing society to live a healthier physical and mental lifestyle in the
It is said that the reason for student-athletes experiencing higher stress levels are because of their extensive time-demands, pressures to achieve, physical burn-out and conflict with teammates, coaches and teachers. (J. W. 2015). In one hand I believe that this overall statement is true, but on the other hand I believe the amount of stress depends on the individual and there involvement with their academics and athletics (Sudano, L. E., Collins, G., & Miles, C. M. (2017). With social stress, the
The ability for high school sports to give athletes a break from the classroom allows them to clear their minds. Students have the chance to forget about the things that may be bothering them as well as allowing them to have fun for a bit. Research shows that the movement of the brain’s physiology has an effect on the way that a person does things throughout their life. In fact, a study shows that people who have been physically activity or have participated in sports when they were younger are happier because they have been releasing endorphins which releases stress. Stress is the leading cause of depression in the United States and by exercising, the rate of stress in which a person has can be lowered. High school sports does not just benefit a person's mental health but also a person's physical health.
It can be seen that if an athlete choses to use the tools of sports phycology they will effectively increase their sporting performance and ability. These tools have helped me to improve volleyball ability and
Stress is a very common everyday thing. People have stress so much that most of the time they don’t even know how much it’s affecting them. Stress can really affect your body, mind, and behavior. It is a normal response to situations that make you feel upset or threatened in a way. Stress is the body’s way of change. The change can either be good or bad.
Journaling isn’t for everyone; some choose to mediate to reach full relaxation. Throughout the day, when we experience stress, our bodies automatically react in ways that prepare us to fight or run. In some cases of extreme danger, this physical response is helpful. However, a prolonged state of such agitation can cause physical damage to every part of the body. Meditation affects the body in exactly the opposite ways that stress does, restoring the body to a calm state, helping the body to repair it self, and preventing new damage due to the physical effects of stress (Scott, 2010).
Another way one can manage stress is through breathing control and meditation. Breathing control includes the “take ten deep breaths” attempt to managing stress. Breathing helps one to calm themselves, and to think more
Attention Getter: Life is like a huge roller coaster, a journey full of twists and turns, and ups and downs. And sometimes in this journey there arises various situations where one is unable to deal with these turns, let alone have the energy to face the ups and downs. In situations when the downward spiral becomes difficult to overcome it seems to linger on and on. The major cause of such feelings, are the chaotic activities of life. Stress is no
