The artistic piece Union II was created by Yaacov Agam in 1977 and the artwork was a gift from Jane Bradley Pettit to the Milwaukee Art Museum. Many questions arise in this piece because of its unorthodox features compared to many of the pieces that surrounded it in the museum. In this analysis, we will discuss and answer questions about the artwork itself, kinetic art, artist, purpose, and meaning. Simple lines, geometrical shapes, overlaps, and warm and cold hues are being used in this artwork in all 3 perspective angles. On the left-side-view we have straight rectangular shapes and very conforming colors giving a cold feeling, on the right-side-view we have shapes with curved edges and warm colors giving off the feeling of energy, and then …show more content…
He alongside many other artists involved themselves in constructivism. Although he did not focus as much on constructing machine-like sculptures or artworks is artworks showed how even the simplest of arts can be kinetic (Kinetic Art Movement, Artists and Major Works). This is what eventually brought him to make a series of artworks that were like Union II. The intent with these pieces he makes is to give the viewer the message of perspective and show them his illusionary artworks that are something else. Many of his artworks have different perspective meaning, for instance in Union II, we see on one side a set of red hues then on the other side we see a blue set of hues; the artist wanted to obviously give the impression of hot and cold and then you can see both sides collaged by directly looking into the front view. This is, in my opinion, why the artist created the title “Union” II for this …show more content…
The most obvious meaning or message is the different perspectives you could have by viewing artwork at different angles. We can see that in this work there are 3 different artworks that can be seen from the left and right 45-degree angle view as well as the front view. In each of these views the artworks have their own features that enhance their own meanings and overalls meaning of the work; in the left side view we see that there are dark and bluish colored hues with straight edges which gives the meaning of perfection, conformity, and coldness. Thinking of this brought of the thought of working in an office for a very large corporation or a typical 9 to 5 job. On the right-side view, the colors are warm red hues with rounded edges that give that give a deeper meaning of energy or being free of stress and the societal needs of being perfect. Tying this information together the artist could have also wanted the viewer to realize that not everyone thinks the same or has the same perspectives when viewing just about anything in life; this was the meaning that initially struck me when viewing this
It appears that there are injuries and wounds scarring his bare torso. The name is looking down in deep thought or sadness. The colours black, white, red and orange are the most significant throughout. Red is usually associated with blood, war and heart-break. The orange swirls around his head indicates that there are many thoughts going on in the man’s head. The black background suggests feelings of isolation and loneliness.
His frustration is visible in the expression on his face. He appears tired of her bothering him about it, hence the hand. The child is showing a lot of white which can represent faith, I think the artist did this to say that the baby is giving the family faith because they are trying to provide for their child and in order to do that they need to be able to put food on the table which won’t just only help the baby but them as a whole. The woman may also symbolize strength that’s why the artist made her dress and lipstick red; she’s fiery. She may help the husband maintain his sanity no matter how many problems they are going through as a family.
Red appears to dominate the painting and serves as an eye-catching color. The use of intensely saturated colors draws the attention to the front couple. Additionally, the red color plays with the mind of the onlooker without them thinking about it. It suggests deep passion, anger, and struggle. The artist intends to relay his feelings about the event to the viewer. His outlook consists of disgust towards the great depression that leaves many taken advantage of due to desperation.

The stripes in the painting represents bars in a jail cell. The face in the picture is an African American woman that looks tired and worn out. She feels imprisoned because her right to vote is not given to her. As stated in class, the work of art questions patriotism, equality justice and happiness. The stripes on the American flag are a vertical shape and signify valor, purity, and justice. In the artwork the stripes are horizontal as a jail cell. Ringggold was trying to imply that African American do not have justice and are not treated equally to Whites. This artwork is abstract. It resembles real things in the real world but is
Concerning color, there is a stark contrast between the figure on the painting and the background. More specifically, the figure of the woman is predominantly delineated in white color, especially pale, ashen white, as far her apparel and facial complexion are concerned, while there are also various hues of grey, with respect to her hair and accessory feather. These white and grey shades are vividly contrasted with the prevailing red and crimson hues of the background (viz. the drape, armchair, and table). Moreover, one can detect colors of dark green (jewelry), some beige on the left (pillar), and darker or lighter shades of blue on the right side of the canvas (sky), which all in concert and in addition to the subtle purple hue forming the sun or moon exude a certain dramatic sentiment. Also, there is brown, which often easily segues into gold (viz. books and attire details respectively). The main contrast of colors between white and red would be interpreted as serving the purpose of rendering the figure of the woman, and especially her face, the focal point of the work, despite, paradoxically enough, the lush red shades at the background. Bearing that in mind, the significance of the woman’s face will be enlarged upon later, when discussing aspects of her identity.
Lastly, some people can see the world differently, but the majority sees it the same. For example, in the story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker the author adds, “Her eyes seemed stretched open, blazed open by the flames reflected in them.” What the author means in the quote is that years back a house was burned to the ground and it affected Maggie. Maggie witnessed the incident when she was younger and
In America’s history, Native Americans have been discriminated against and oppressed repeatedly. Various authors have brought attention to the mistreatment of this group of people, and the theme of Natives and the American Dream can be seen in numerous literary works. In the poems “Ellis Island” by Joseph Bruchac III and “Evolution” by Sherman Alexie, the authors bring attention to the hardships Native Americans have faced, and show a different perspective of the American Dream.
In today’s society, art can be described as many things, no longer is art considered just a painting or drawing like it was back in the nineteenth century. One of the most memorable events from the nineteenth century was the Civil War, which was a dispute between the north and south that resulted in many impactful and sentimental works of art. One prime example would be Constant Mayer’s Recognition: North and South, which can be located at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. This piece of art can be analyzed in many ways such as its structure and the historical background behind this art piece. Recognition:
I earned critical praise for work that explored religious and classical themes. I was born in NY and was known for sculpting abolitionist leaders and civil war heros. In 1867 I moved to Rome and used the neoclassical style to voice my concerns about the revolution. My work over the next few decades moved between African-American themes influenced by Catholicism.
The act of not remembering a day or event happens to everyone at one point or another. For some, it happens often. These people may have amnesia, alzheimer's, or dementia. Said diseases all affect the memory and comprehension of the person that it is thriving off of. Some days are better than others, but they all do the same thing. According to http://www.alz.org/facts/, one in three elderly persons will develop alzheimers or dementia throughout their lives with the number totaling over five million in the United States today. This number increases by one every sixty six seconds. This isn’t always the case for strange behavior. Throughout the novel Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, the character Billy Pilgrim takes the reader on quite an adventure ranging from his days in the Army in Dresden, to his journey to Tralfamadore and the circumstances as being a Prisoner of War under the British and German Army. These ventures span the length of the novel to create a
The background has areas of dark and light that may be representing a dark part of this woman's life and the light area showing awakening in this woman's soul. To me the woman in the painting is staring out into the world and realizing that there is so much out there for her. That she can walk out of there and not be lost any more. Mrs. Mallard felt the same way. In the room she realized that she can now live her life on her own the way she wants to. She walked out of the room with a sense of
Filled with shades of red, the upper part of the painting comes to create a strong opposition with the black area below it, itself encircled by a darker red. This painting consisting of three floating rectangles in various colour combinations, creates a sombre mood conducive to spiritual contemplation. With the use of Rothko's saturated colours the viewers are moved
There are three themes that are used throughout the reading which are; love, beauty, and death. The most important theme in this story would be beauty. When the husband gets so attached to his art work he forgets about the beautiful wife he has of his own and only thinks about the beauty of this portrait. Love is also showed in this story but by the wife. The wife is so in love with her husband she is willing to do anything and everything to make her husband happy. Which is not getting in the away of him painting his picture. The last theme would be death even though this is a major theme it comes last. After the husband not realizing the actual beauty and love the
