During this book, the government decides who you are paired with when you turn 17 years old. Cassia, the main character, turned 17 years old and the government chose Xander to be her partner. They were each given micro cards about each other, even though they are best friends. On Cassia’s card it shows a different person, Ky Markham. Is it fate or destiny? Cassia ponders if Xander is her right choice or is Ky. Experiences in her life throughout the story makes it so that she can’t choose between either of them and needs both of them. This is also said by Cassia in the book, “Am I supposed to fight against authority?” This sentence occurs after her grandfather dies and leaves her a poem. She knows that she couldn’t keep it, because when it
Paul and Jake are good sportsman. Paul is a good sportsman because he doesn't make a fit when he does something wrong and if he does something wrong Jake can keep trying to make it better, on the other hand Jake is also a good sportsman because maybe people make fun of him but he doesn't care. Jake is who he is and nobody can change that. In the article, " Going blind did not stop Jake Olson from loving football, or playing it", the author says " The play must be perfect." This quote develops Jakes characters by revealing that Jake Olson doesn't get mad when he doesn't get a perfect play and that he can keep trying.
In Rodman Philbrick curious novel, Freak The Mighty two misfits learn to cope with each other. Philbrick’s use of tone and mood, displays the development of the boys character and relationship. Max and Kevin feel nerve wracked, when they are on their way to the firework show. Tony, a mischievous kid, maliciously intimidates a worried Max. Kevin confidently intimidates Tony by outwitting him. This shows that Kevin defends Max, showing him he cares. This is important because it demonstrates how Max now trust Kevin. Philbrick expresses this connection with a strong tone of fear and confidence. Later, Tony fiercely attacks Kevin and Max again. A shelfish Tony says, “Slice and Dice.” This makes Kevin fuel up with confidence. This shows that Kevin
"Zeena herself, from an oppressive reality, had faded into an insubstantial shade." This quote from the perspective of the main character, Ethan Frome illuminates Edith Wharton's theme and message of silence, the working force in the novella which tares the characters apart. It is Ethan and Zeena who, unhappily married, remain together to appease their community while their thoughts continue to remain unsaid, silenced to maintain the lies that lay in the innermost parts of themselves, changing their character beyond redemption. It is this silence that Ethan continues to uphold which cripples him, trapping him in a depression that emits the loudest cry of grief. This significant factor in the narrative intrigues the thought "is it better to
Matteo Alacrán is a clone, which are the roadkill of the land called Opium in the book The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. Matteo, also known as Matt throughout the story, is the clone of the Lord of Opium, who we later find out is a very evil man. At a young age, he had no friends besides his guardian, Celia, and lived in an isolated place in the farms of Opium. When he was six years old, he is found by 3 children. Steven is the original Matteo Alacran’s Great-Great-Grandson, while Emilia and Maria are the children of the Senator of the United States. At first sight, they believe Matt is an eejit, which is like a zombie, until Matt breaks the window and jumps out, landing on glass and passing out.
Matt meet’s his new teacher for the first time,”‘ Learning is fun!’ said Teacher. ‘I’ll bet you’re a smart boy. I’ll bet you learn all your lessons fast and make your mommy proud of you’ […] ‘He can read a bit, though.’ ‘Reading is fun!’ Teacher said in a hearty voice.”(71). During this quote, Matt has just met his new teacher who tells him to call her “Teacher.” Matt notices how she acts a bit off or different than other people he has met. Most of the dialogue in this quote comes from Teacher and some of the words are from Tam Lin speaking for Matt since Matt still hasn’t spoken yet. This is indirect characterization for Teacher. In this particular quote, the author is using the method “speech” to show the teacher’s feelings towards teaching. Earlier in the book, the author also uses Matt’s thoughts to characterize Teacher as being a little bit weird. From this quote we can figure out that Teacher is very excited and optimistic based on the amount of exclamations she uses. We know that she is very cheerful based on the way that she talks about how learning and reading are
In the beginning of the story Cassia seems satistfied and doesn’t seem to doubt her society at all. When matched with Xander, she was excited. She had always liked Xander, but was never able to like him more than just a friend. However, she admitted that she did like him as more than friend, but thought since they were in the same province that they would not be matched together, because it has rarely ever occurred. When walking with Xander, Xander grabs Cassia’s hand and he claims that they are now allowed to show physical affection if they both want to. When Xander says this Cassia thinks to herself, “And I do want….the touch of his hand against mine with nothing to
Mark Twain once said, “To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” This quote implies that individuals who possess a lot of authority often take advantage of it, which is agreeable and can be supported by Dave Egger’s non-fiction novel Zeitoun. In Zeitoun, the people who were a part of the police force and military that had authority in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina took advantage of their power and wrongfully arrested many people left in the city. On Tuesday September 6th, Zeitoun, Nasser, Ronnie, and Todd were met in the foyer of the Claiborne house by men in mismatched police and military uniforms who all had M-16s and pistols, at least ten guns were visible to Zeitoun and the others.
The act of losing faith is difficult to avoid in stressful situations. Elie and his fellow victims experienced various degrees of their loss of faith, as seen in Night. Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night is about his personal experiences in Auschwitz. He records what he personally went through when he was in the Nazi concentration camp for a year. In the novel Night, Ellie Wiesel and the other Jews struggle to learn that it's difficult to maintain a person's faith during tough times.
Cassia wants to make her own path, chose who she wants to be with, and in this small act she shows who she
To understand Cassia you have to understand that she is very protective of her friends and family. She always does something to make her brother either happy or safe. For example, she said “what I risk has a limit. I won’t risk Bram”. She is very loving towards Ky because she would always talk about him and how perfect he is. She is always very observant because she could notice things no one else did like the poison in the food when the old turns eighty.
She is speaking her own mind now and she is with who she truly loves, Ky. Red is again key for the red tablet, which makes you forget things, but, the cover is also red because of the scars from the plague, that gets introduced in Reached. In this book, Ally wrote in summary “After leaving Society to desperately seek The Rising, and each other, Cassia and Ky have found what they were looking for, but at the cost of losing each other yet again. Cassia is assigned undercover in Central city, Ky outside the borders, an airship pilot with Indie. Xander is a medic, with a secret. All too soon, everything shifts again.” Basically, Cassia and Ky have joined the rising and are defeating the plague. They have finally ‘reached’ the end of this journey. The goats have finally got past the troll and have settled into their beautiful new home (the
Cassia doesn’t realize bending the rules is necessary until she meets her true love, Ky. This supports the theme because as soon as she realized what her father did, it became for love easier for her to break the rules. Since the rules were very strict, not many people were prone to break them. But, as soon as Cassia fell in love, it seems as though she became known to breaking the rules. However, her love for her family limited her diving headfirst into rebellion.
Friendships will come and go but you’ll know when you have a real friendship, because it will be there forever in your heart, even if he or she is not there with you. To begin the book Freak the Mighty, written by Rodman Philbrick, is about the friendship between two boys who both have disabilities. Max being one with a learning disability and Kevin being the other with a disease of morquio syndrome. Throughout the book it shows us the adventures and the challenges that Max and Freak go on and face together. In the fiction book Freak the Mighty, written by Rodman Philbrick, two themes showed.
After reading Freak the Mighty and participating in this lesson, I have learned a myriad of thoughts/ideas pertaining to friendship. These thoughts and ideas are much more different than they were before. For example, before, I used to think that a friend is someone who liked the same things as me and never disagreed with me. But now, I know that a friend is someone who will be honest with me, who will be there for me all of the time through thick and thin, and who will enjoy my company. This is far from what I accepted as the truth of friendship, and I owe it all to this course to expose me to the true meaning of friendship
ve you ever got treated badly because you are different? Matt did in the book, The House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer. He got treated badly because he a clone. This book is about using livestock to clone human beings. It describes the behavior and relationship between human beings when they are born through normal way versus clones. The theme I think best is people treat others with disrespect just because they are different. The first evidence from the book is when Rosa mistreats Matt because she found out that he was a clone. The second evidence is that Steven, Emilia and Benito are unfriendly to Matt because he was a clone. The third evidence that support my theme is that Mr. Alacran and Felicia treats Matt very bad because
