When was the WVSA constructed and how was it modified? The WVSA was built in two phases around 1967. WVSA went online for primary treatment plant in 1968. In 1988, the WVSA decided to add the second treatment plant. The modification occurred when the second treatment plant was built. The second treatment plant allowed the removal of organic matter to reach 97%. What is the source of the sewage and from what communities does it originate? The source is a combination of sanitary and storm sewages; majority of the combined sewage water comes from the Wilkes-Barre area. In addition, other communities that contribute to the sewage water source are places like Dallas PA, Lehman township, Hanover township, and more. How does the sewage arrive at the WVSA? Sewage arrives at the WVSA by pumping all the waste water from the combined/ storm sewers and collecting it in the wet-well then transferred to the influent pumps. Another place the sewage can arrive at WVSA is from other places who decided not to upgrade like, Lehman Township, that has the WVSA treat their waste for them instead. The new total maximum daily limit of nitrogen, phosphorus, and total dissolved solids would force WVSA to upgrade to a 25-million-dollar system. Instead of doing the expensive upgrade, the WSVA decided to fix the problems in house by using biological nitrate removal. The biological nitrate removal cost WSVA 400 thousand dollars which was paid by fundraising. Any other upgrades or advances to the biological removal would be paid by fundraising, complete funds from the WSVA, or the state would give WSVA half of the money while WSVA would pay the
