One of the proudest moments for my family was seeing a determined 20 year old walk down the stage holding a Master of Arts in Criminology degree in her delicate hands. When looking at the video recording of the graduation, I noticed that as the young girl gracefully walked through the stage, she received attention from her friends and family, as well as from countless people in the auditorium. The burst of self-confidence that she portrayed outshined the rest of the graduates. Most importantly, however, her eyes glistened as she declared how thankful she was for being significantly blessed with a strong family bond. Only after seeing myself in the video, did I realize that only I knew that I was a complete nervous wreck. I remember asking myself: Will I stumble and fall? Will I cry so much that my makeup smears and creates a black eye effect? Will I be capable of having a prosperous profession? Watching the video; however, enhanced my willpower towards successfully assisting the less fortunate. The video …show more content…
Now that I am a police officer, I completely understand the significance of their words. Although my only goal in life remains the same, my aspirations are now refined. Assisting those in need is my forte, however, as an officer, I do not always have access to resources that are readily available to help victims of crimes. Everything is a process and I have learned the importance of patience. As a Domestic Violence Deputy, I have been capable of assisting more people than when I was a patrol officer. In the past, I have obtained both paid and volunteered experience in helping victims of crimes. I have also volunteered at shelters for the homeless. Providing victim services gives me a sense of gratitude that most officers are not able to experience on a daily
Let me be the first of many to congratulate you on your educational endeavors and success! I understand that the journey was tough, but you’ve succeeded and decided to continue your education in our great field of choice, criminology and criminal justice. The territory that you’ve embarked on may have been a bit scary being the first in your family to do so as well as deciding whether to go to graduate school or not. Have no fear though, there are many of us (yes, I am a first-generation student too!) that have treaded the same waters and survived. Though, the process may not have been that easy, we’ve all made it and this essay is to help you become even more successful than any of us by giving you tips early on in the first year
In criminal justice research is the basis for maintaining an effective system. It helps to discern what methods of correction or deterrence are most impactful, what mannerisms, behaviors, and events drive criminality, and what crimes are most prominent in our society among a slew of other things (Maxfield, Babbie, 2015). Research is detrimental to the propulsion of our society as a whole, and within our criminal justice system, it can be the difference between the procurement of a functioning society and anomie.
A recent policy was implemented by Jackson Tennessee’s Police Department, and Family Service’s dealing with the problem of child endangerment. Any household that has any documented offense of domestic violence, child abuse, or drug or alcohol related offense committed by the parents, guardian, grandparent, or babysitter, the child/children will be placed in the care of the state or foster care services, until it is proven that the offender has undergone any or all of the following, and has been offense free for a period of no less than six-months. The offender can choose
I am applying to Sacramento State University for admission to the Master’s program in Criminal Justice. I am particularly interested in Criminological Theory, Law Adjudication, and Administration of Justice. My interest in helping others, especially in the community in which I live in, goes back to when I started school. This interest has only grown through my years in high school and college. Having volunteered and participated in internships with various law enforcement agencies, I have been exposed to the dynamic elements of criminal justice.
From since I was a young child I have always wanted to go into the field of Human Services. As I have grown I have decided that I would go into the Criminal Justice side of Human Services. By this I mean that I still want to help people, but I want to help people who have become criminals or who are on the path of becoming criminals. I especially want to help children and teens who have been in and out of a Juvenal Detention Center. From this passion I have decided that I want to go into one of three careers. These careers are as follows; Juvenile Defense Attorneys, Juvenile Counselor, or Juvenile Corrections Officer.
The Criminal Justice Program at Lethbridge College is an excellent program to prepare students for a career in the policing world, at an affordable price. The program from Lethbridge College has been around for many years, as a result is known worldwide for providing students of the program with the skills necessary to perform well in the field. The program is also very affordable for the excellent education you receive, it is well worth your investment. I know many graduates of this program, many of whom are now working for the RCMP or a municipal police force. The Criminal Justice-Policing program is a two-year college diploma program with the option to take an additional two years to receive a degree in Criminal Justice. The program
The 4-year college that I researched was NC A&T. NC A&T is located in Greensboro, North Carolina and it is a public campus which means anyone can go there. The weather at NC A&T is very nice because most of the days are dry but you could experience some rainy and cold days as well. There also can be some foggy days when you wake up so you would have to be careful of your surroundings while walking or driving around campus. If you ever feel in danger or uncomfortable walking to and from your dorm rooms or classes, there are campus police/security on campus to help you feel safer as you make your daily commutes. NC A&T has some good majors that you can take as an undergraduate or graduate. One major that I was interested in was criminology. Criminology
It is very difficult to be a member of law enforcement or any public service job in this day in age. Over the past few years there have been countless attacks against police officers. Fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters have done the dauntless task of waking up in the morning, and putting on a badge and a gun to protect those in their community. Some of those people would never return home, laying down their lives for strangers. This is a reality I must face every day my dad drives to work. My father, Rich, has been a police officer in the City of Milford for 23 years. Public service has shaped my dad’s life, but more importantly is has influenced the person that I am today. Even though I am sure he would disagree, my dad is nothing less than a hero in
Analyzing the criminal justice system is somewhat challenging because it is a very complex structure, furnishing thousands of tedious elements. However, there are dependable methods that guide researchers to new explanations. Essentially, the use of theory and crime measurement plays an important role in attempting to distinguish a better understanding of why criminal behavior occurs and how the system functions.
Perhaps I have not experienced the events described in the video--such as financial issues--but I have also experienced times of vulnerability. Sometimes when I am struggling at school, losing confidence in myself, or simply need to vent out my anger, it is very helpful when there is someone nearby. It seems like when I find myself in these difficult situations, it is very comforting when I have a line of friends and family to support me. This makes me want to help others through rough times as well.
Crime—an illegal act that may be prosecuted and is punishable by law. Crime is normal and will always be a part of the society. We desire to have money, power, and leisure. In order for a society to function and to ensure the safety of its own citizens, maintenance of common values is critical. However, people do not always abide by this collective moral sense due to different experiences, influences, and circumstances. The criminal justice system also have a huge impact of why crimes continue to exist or re-exists among criminals. Walters (2015) stated “we must be mindful of the subjective aspects of decision making when imposing sanctions on those who violates society’s laws. Many such offenders, in fact, view prison as a mean of cultivating
In the example number 3 on page 79 in the book Research methods for criminal justice and criminology, the ethical issue is that the researcher fails to report the violation after he discovers the participant was involved in a crime. This jeopardize the research by possibly having tainted results. The researcher’s job is to gained trustful information to convert a hypothesis into a fact and by not reporting this issue it becomes biased. It is very disappointing the way the researcher handle the situation. The result of that research could have been very valuable at the moment and used as future references for the society and students, but he decided to continue the research even though this could be detrimental.
Law enforcement officers in today society are looked down on, when they used to be looked at as heroic icons. There are millions of police officers on the roads right now patrolling the street to protect you and I. It’s upsetting to know that some people take them for granted and would rather see them dead than using their own life to protect theirs. Heroes are not always considered heroes. People we look up to can make mistakes, but it’s only because no one is perfect. Perfection is not an achievable goal, but it is a good goal to set. Knowing you may not reach your goal shouldn’t discourage you, but inspire knowing that you can always become better. There won’t be a hero out there to save everyone, because they’ll never be perfect, but they definitely
Crime Analysts usually lean towards to justify their existence as crime analysts in what is known as law implementation agency. It makes sense to analyze crime. There may be more further reasons depending on the geographic efforts, community culture, and others, but the most value reasons could be the following:
I was born to Caribbean parents in Brooklyn, New York in late October of 1993. My father is from Haiti and my mother is from Puerto Rico. Both of my parents are the first to be born in the United States. Growing up, I split my time between Brooklyn and Queens. In the beginning of my childhood, I was raised in Brooklyn with my mother, grandparents, and two brothers. From the ages of 2 to 6, my father was in jail. When he was released, my family and I uprooted and moved to Queens, New York. Although the move was quite a distance from my elementary school, my parents made it their business to keep us enrolled because it was one of the best school’s in New York City. I was bullied throughout elementary and middle school; the kids would tease me about my weight, about me going to therapy, to how my hair was styled, and so forth. Although I was teased mercilessly, I had a great group of friends who liked me for who I was. At a young age, I was diagnosed with ADHD. From my diagnosis, I began taking pills to help me concentrate. Children with ADHD are at a higher risk of becoming promiscuous, indulging in illegal activities, and self-medicating.
