World War II: Different Viewpoints, Same Suffering When one thinks of war, the image that comes to mind is of blood and death. Usually at the front of our minds are the soldiers fighting for their country, however we tend to push to the back of our minds the other civilians who suffer. The truth is, both sides suffer from war, especially from wars such as World War II. WWII lasted from 1939-1945 and was a global war. It was marked by the mass murder of many civilians by events such as the Holocaust. The Holocaust occurred when the Nazis, a German force, launched a genocide to kill all Jews, forcing them into death camps where over six million of the innocent civilians were killed in many brutal ways. Yet it was not only the civilians who suffered, many soldiers fighting against the Nazis were killed or tortured for working against them. During this time, and for many years after, many poets emerged and shared their work about the horrors of battle. Like pieces of a puzzle, they come together to show the whole story, complete with all the different viewpoints and feelings shared throughout the world. Many of these wonderful poets are not known, such as the author of “Can You Take It?” which was a poem found on the wall of a solitary confinement cell in Dulag Luft, a German interrogation center. An American POW who had been taken in for questioning had written poetry in his time of misery, poetry that we still read and honor today. Many years later, Barbara Sonek, a poet
War is cruel. The Vietnam War, which lasted for 21 years from 1954 to 1975, was a horrific and tragic event in human history. The Second World War was as frightening and tragic even though it lasted for only 6 years from 1939 to 1945 comparing with the longer-lasting war in Vietnam. During both wars, thousands of millions of soldiers and civilians had been killed. Especially during the Second World War, numerous innocent people were sent into concentration camps, or some places as internment camps for no specific reasons told. Some of these people came out sound after the war, but others were never heard of again. After both wars, people that were alive experienced not only the physical damages, but also the psychic trauma by seeing the
The warfare of WWI affected society by causing crucial pain to many soldiers. Many soldiers came home limping and blind. When soldiers came home wives and children were distraught to see them in this condition. Everyone did not have hope in the United States winning this war anymore. One reason the soldiers came home blind was because of poisonous gas. The gas would slowly asphyxiate the soldiers, and the wind will blow the gas towards the villages where the civilians lived. So since the gas would spread to the villages the civilians would suffer for no reason. But, this is sort of the soldiers fault because they used this gas but it is not really their fault for the wind blowing the gas.
The psychologist Sigmund Freud once said, “Because every man has a right over his own life and war destroys lives that were full of promise; it forces the individual into situations that shame his manhood, obliging him to murder fellow men, against his will.” He initially stated this when he was corresponding with Albert Einstein via letter. This quote is also a great explanation of the events that take place during war that people chose to not recognise. War is terrible, and no matter how hard we try, nothing will change that. Erich Maria Remarque shows us that soldiers have endured dreadfully throughout World War I in his book “All Quiet on the Western Front”. The character in the book, Paul Baumer, endures through the tragedies of war with some of his old schoolmates as well as new comrades that he meets along the way. They survive through all of the tragedies together, but in the end, the war made them lose their friendships as well as their lives. The reality is that war comes with consequences while it destroys people, and there is nothing that will ever be able to change that. The book “All Quiet on the Western Front” shows how war comes destroys people's lives with its consequences through three of its themes: the importance of comradery, the loss of innocence, and the horrors and brutality of war.
As war progressed, so did the views of those who originally believed war was righteous. People could not ignore the pain and suffering, they began to feel great pity. Wilfred Owen, possibly the greatest war poet, often wrote of the tragedy. He wrote many poems but one which very effectively captures the sad and horrific truth is " Dulce et Decorum est " The poem almost lets us experience what the unfortunate soldiers had to endure. We feel the mental anguish encountered by men suffering in the helpless situation of a gas attack.
War leads to oppression and leaves negative implications on all people and societies by impacting the poor, women, children, and nations as a whole. "War is a state of violent conflict between one or more groups" (Rasenberger 3). Rasenberger defines war as a state of conflict between one group within itself or several groups in combat with each other, what is not mentioned are the after-effects of war. War itself leads to many civilian and military deaths, an estimated 1.5-3.8 million people died during the Vietnam War and an approximate 500,000 people died in the Iraq war. The biggest tragedy of War is that it always results in fatality, but another key, negative, factor to understand is that after the War many adverse implications arise. Post-war ramifications in the nation fall upon the poor, women, and children, making them weaker and less motivated leading to the downfall of a society. Regardless if a nation wins or is defeated in war they have to deal with consequences of war and find solutions to the impacted people and society. It is essential to understand that there is never a true victor in war because regardless of the outcome, fatality and a fall of morale within society on both sides are inevitable. War has often been the solution to situations that required force or violence, but in recent times this has
World War II was the most destructive and deadliest war in history. There were about eleven million people killed just in the holocaust. World War II started on September 1st, 1939 after Germany invaded Poland. Three days later Britain and France declared war on Germany, at the time the U.S. was neutral. Through 1941, germany controlled most of Europe and was a very big threat.
War causes death, poverty, diseases, destruction, and many more devastating and unavoidable consequences. The government drafted men into military service, giving them no choice but to separate them from their daily lives, friends, and families. Soldiers fight in wars while putting their lives on the line and are only rewarded with physical or psychological injuries. Countries wage war against one another in order to resolve disputes and disagreements between them. Individuals, such as nurses, soldiers, and civilians undergo traumatic events when they are caught in the middle of a war. Although some may argue that war does not impact the self the most, based on the informational text, “War Escalates” by Paul Boye, the short story, “Where
World War II was a disaster millions of soldiers, civilians, and beloved famous people were killed. Eleven million civilians were killed during WWII. There were many ways these civilians were killed like concentration camps, malnutrition, and typhus. Auschwitz was one of the main camps built to kill.
A fact which we all have to emit is that humanity existence always creates conflicts and fighting which we call "WAR". In war, people kill each others for many reasons ---- resources, personal benefits, territories, powers, revenge, etc. In war, one becomes a hero for killing human lives and eventually he gets honored and well-known in people 's heart. The Holocaust, according to Germans, was the war between Germans and Jews. Approximately six million Jews included 960,000 innocent children died during Hitler 's regime called Nazism. Unlike the "hero(s)" whom people honor, the Holocaust was a hideous crime and the participants were bloody murderers. Today people are taught about the Holocaust
World War II was a devastating war that impacted the entire world. It is estimated that nearly 60 million people were killed, including civilians. The fight was between the Allies and Axis powers. While the United States tried to remain neutral in the war and not get involved. However, due to Japan’s military launching
“The world must know what happened, and never forget” (Eisenhower). This quote came from General Eisenhower in 1945, before he became president in 1953, as he visited Nazi death camps at the end of World War II. Eisenhower indicated that the horrific events that occurred throughout World War II in which military technology advanced far too rapidly for people to control should not be slipped from the memories of society, but recognized so that it can never happen again. But the majority of society did try to forget about the dreadful affairs of World War II through materialism and conservatism. These two philosophies were used to conceal the emotions brought upon society during the war in order to live unaware and ignorant, although ignorance
The Holocaust, genocide, the Final Solution, or World War II; it doesn't matter what you call it, nothing can make the horrific events that occurred any less terrible. From 1939 to 1945 a raging war between the Allies and Axis powers. The Allies, who were made up of the United States of America, led by President Franklin Delanor Roosevelt, the Soviet Union, led by Joseph Stalin, and Great Britain, led by Winston Churchill. The Allies were trying to defeat the Axis powers made up of Germany, led by the heinous dictator Adolf Hitler, Italy, led by Benito Mussolini, and Japan, led by Hideki Tojo. The war resulted in many casualties, many by civilians who had to part in the conflict. The events that occurred will be remembered forever in text,
If we take a minute to look back on history, we see a terrifying event that took place during WWll. This event practically broke our society to pieces, scarred many hearts, and devastatingly took many lives. This event caused many people to be targeted, tortured, and killed. Miserably, this event still hurts many people today. This tragedy is known as the Holocaust.
War is one of the hardest times to live through no matter what age or where one is, everyone will be affected eventually by it. This could be the pain of losing someone or learning about how people were treated in some other place. Every person however, has to adapt and overcome the change when the war is over because time still passes by and keeps on dragging one along. One of the worst wars based on the affect it had on many people was World War II, where not only soldiers were involved but many innocent people died in concentration camps. How does one mourn the loss of so many people without offending the victim or the murderer?
World War II had a really big conflict on values and ideas because most countries in Europe were involved and some thought that they were being cheated on each other, countries like japan wanted to use more resources to help their people and to help their factories run properly. The ideas were also a major conflict in World War II as the ideas such as the treaty of Versailles did not go well with Germany as they had to pay a big price as they lost in the World War I and they had to compensate France and Great Britain. And countries which did win the war talked about issues like territory invasions, war issues and so on. This did not go well with Germany. Some nations did not allow other nations to enter their territories as they had promised
