World War 1 was the First World War that was fought between the Allied Nations and the Central Powers. It lasted from July 28, 1914 to November 11, 1918. The Central Powers consisted of the German Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, and the Bulgarian Empire. The Allied Powers consisted of Great Britain, France, Russia, and Italy. The United States later on joined the Allied Powers in 1917 during the war, and that was really beneficial for them. In the end, it seems the Allied Powers won the war. The main countries that helped them gain this victory were the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.

More than 9 million soldiers and 7 million citizens died in or because of the war, making WWI the bloodiest war by far. Prior to the Great War, Tensions were growing, Nationalism was one the rise, and counties were making alliances and gearing up for war. United Kingdom, France, and the Russian Empire made up the Triple Entente while Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Germany signed an alliance treaty known as the Triple Alliance. It did not take much of a spark for war to start.

World War I (or at the time known as “The Great War”) began in Europe but eventually included countries such as the United States and Japan. The war went from 1914 until 1918, it started soon after Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia upon the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. In what seemed as small tension between these two countries soon caused their allies to be drawn in this conflict. Although the assassination was merely the spark to the war, it was not main cause. The strong mindset and belief in nationalism and militarism along with alliances were what led to the war.

It may well be that this recognition will prompt rediscoveries and new gratefulness — the way the Bicentennial provoked prominent and scholarly rediscovery of American convention going back to the Revolution and the Constitution.

Historians define a world war as a war involving numerous nations of the world. World War I, also regarded as “The Great War,” had a tremendous impact on western civilization and the world, financially and physiologically. Although all countries should be blamed for World War I, Germany did the most to provoke the war to its extremes by attempting to send the Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico, which would result in conflict with the United States of America. In 1917, Germany attempted to send the Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico, which would try to persuade them in joining their side of the war by promising them they would help Mexico take back the territory and states they had lost in the Mexican American War that occurred from 1846 to 1848. Since Mexico had lost around a third of their territory from the Mexican Cession including Texas, New Mexico, and California, where gold was discovered shortly after it was appropriated, the offer from Germany would have been too good to ignore. Nevertheless, British cryptographers had intercepted the secret message before it was able to reach Mexico and showed it to America. The Zimmerman Telegram spurred outraged Americans to join the war against Germany on April 6, 1917 on the Allies’ side because they were angry that Germany would pull such a deal behind their backs.The boost of America joining the Allies’ side refreshed the Allies’ morale to resume their ceaseless warfare and the war became more extreme with the addition of the powerful nation (Lecture, 12/3/14). The Four Minute Men where a public relations group that worked for the government around the time of World War I (WWI). They would manipulate information at of the war and then share that information with the public. One of the 75,000 would share this information during the reel changes at the movie, which was about four minutes, thus the name (Guth & Marsh. 2012. pg. 66). Sometimes instead of a person delivering that message they would produce small feature to get the point across, such as Pershing’s Crusaders and Under Four Flags (Guth & Marsh. 2012. pg. 66). These men motivated people to become active in this war by manipulating information to the benefit of the people thus creating a historical impact that would change the way the public see public relations.

The Second World War, more commonly known as World War II (WW2), was a globally destructive war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. Although the major causes of the war began earlier the trigger that caused the ripple effect on the major warring countries was Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland. The prime belligerents were Germany and Japan who were part of the Axis powers during the war, warring against the United States, Great Britain, and France who were categorized within the Allied Powers. Although countless countries were included in the Axis and Allied Powers these were the major combatants in the war. Considering how the United States remained neutral throughout the better part of the war they were surprisingly affected on the homefront. WW2 changed American lives in the U.S greatly and mainly for the better. Due to the war, women became the prime laborers in factories while the men fought and for the first time became financially independent; the growing sense of nationalism caused Americans to greatly contribute to the war effort through provisional supplies of food and money which contributed to the war; and most of all the families on the homefront who had sent their men into the war were affected with great sorrow and depression when they discovered the tragedy that had befallen on their loved ones. The Second World War greatly altered the American life for the better for the most part but also cost them a great loss for their country.

It may be hard to conceive, but before the war officially broke out on July 28, 1914, Europe had been in the midst of a peaceful period that had lasted almost a century. World War 1 is also known by a variety of different names, including “The War of Nations”, “The Great War” and “The War to End all Wars”. WWI began on July 28, 1914, when Austria -Hungary declared war on Serbia. There were a number of factors that lead to the start of WWI, but a tangled web of alliances, designed to keep the peace and maintain power in Europe resulted in this regional incident turning into a global conflict. The triggering for this conflict occured on June 28, 1914, when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assasinated along with his wife Sophie, by a Bosnian named Gavrilo Princip. Germany, Russia, Great Britian, and France were all soon drug into the war because the treaties that they’d signed required them to defend other nations. America, however, stayed out of the war for nearly 3 years. After the British ship Lusitania was sunk by the Germans and 1,195 passengers (some being Americans) were killed. President Woodrow Wilson felt the pressure from the American people to enter the conflict. President Wilson attempted a peaceful resoultion, but when the Germans issued threats towards any ship that appraoched Britain, President Wilson declared war on April 6, 1917.

In order to properly put the diplomatic actions leading up to World War 1 in perspective, this essay will examine the diplomatic tendencies after the Napoleonic Era. The period approximately between 1815 and 1900 is pinned as a century of peace. However, this is not the case, and in fact, it could be argued that the diplomacy during this time period was a major cause of World War 1. Although this time period did not contain a massive geographic battle spanning across several continents, it contained many smaller scale wars. These wars were “managed” by the larger powers. During his life Wilfred Owen, the famous war poet, lived under many titles: he was a son, a brother, a student, a teacher, a fighter, an inpatient, a war poet and most importantly, an advocate. This essay addresses his most eminent poems, contrasting the ways in which war was promoted versus the true reality of war, as well as the ways in which Owen gave a voice to the men dying in futile war.
