Boston and New York are major American cities that have grown and prospered since Revolutionary times, in large part due to their location on the Atlantic seaboard. Both were, and continue to be, centers of commerce of ports of entry for visitors and immigrants. Despite some similarities, however, Boston and New York boast some striking differences, as Maier points out, in their people, their politics, in feeling, in character, and "in that wonderfully all-encompassing thing called culture." Within the New World, individuals such as William Bradford, a separatist religious leader as well as governor of Plymouth (131), and Thomas Morton, a lawyer and social reformer, were both very significant men within our history books. The story of Merry Mount/Ma-re Mount is shown from two different perspectives which offers the readers an awareness and understanding of the way religion and government influenced the lives of those who dwelled in Plymouth Massachusetts, and Ma-re Mount. Thomas Morton and William Bradford are somewhat like Tom and Jerry for the reason that they dislike one another and have different accounts of Ma-re Mount/Merry Mount and that they tend to dispute with one another often when it comes to religion. Bradford’s writing tells the story of Merry Mount in a narrative and formal way whereas Morton’s writing is unlike any writing during his time, it’s humorous and also told from a non-Puritans perspective. Although Bradford claims Morton to be an anarchic drunk there are many reasons to say that he was in fact a comedic hero.

In the past, I was not the most outgoing of people. I never spoke over others, and I only opened my mouth when asked. I always let others walk over me because I feared confrontation. I lived within my own bubble of safety. As long as I stayed within the boundaries of everything and away from everyone, I convinced myself that this was the most efficient way to live. No problems with anyone else, and no problems within my life. Although the life I lived was very safe, it was also very colorless. This mindset of safety clouded over me and influenced almost all of my choices.
