Worcester Interfaith was founded in 1993 as a member organization that builds bridges between congregational and community leaders. Currently there are 21 dues paying organization that represents all the diverse cultures in Worcester to advocate for social justice in the community. • How is it funded? Member organizations pay dues that helps fund Worcester Interfaith and these member organizations bring power to the table to be able to get things done. With the power that the member organizations bring, then know what to get additional funding and bring it with them. • What are some of the challenges they face? Some challenges are that people no longer joining community clubs and organizations which eliminated the communal society that people need to be successful. Also, peoples’ public life is struggling because people, mostly white people, privatize their pains and believe that it is something that they must deal with alone. People are to busy working to socialize and partake in the communal life of society. Lastly, there is a struggle finding leaders to run with social project and to take charge for bringing people together. • How many staff in the
The general members of the parish help out with these ministries by signing up at the entrance of the church or contacting the parish office. Members of Mountaineer Catholics are strongly encouraged to participate in these ministries by signing up as well. Many of the members do participate because they feel that it helps them grow in their faith and bring their heart closer to God. I talked to another member of the club, Abby Jo Lutz, who is a board member of Mountaineer Catholics. She is involved with Sarah’s Table. Sarah’s Table was formed to help out the people of Morgantown who are looking for a meal. On every Sunday, Abby Jo Lutz, helps serve a Sunday Lunch to the hungry people of Morgantown. “It is a great way to give back by cooking a meal,” says Abby. She thinks that cooking a meal for the homeless is one of the best opportunities that she has ever taken advantage of. In the process of speaking to the members of the Mountaineer Catholics, I began to realize that the members of this club are truly committed and passionate about leading and helping

A social problem is a condition that at least some people in a community would deem as being undesirable. A social problem is also a condition ‘created’ by a society that is can usually be alleviated or solved by society. According to our textbook, Social Problems: Reading with Four Questions, there are three criteria that a problem must meet in order to be a social problem. First of all, the problem must be social in origin and caused by social factors. The more its causes are social, the more it becomes a social problem.
The alliance is made possible through the efforts of six staff members, with Chris Martin as the president, and a Board of Directors made up of thirteen people. The Roma face a variety of challenges in different parts of the world. When the Roma moved to Western Europe, people took away their history by twisting what it truly meant to be Roma. They also tried to destroy the Roma culture. In Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Roma were stoned by the citizens of Halifax simply because of their ethnicity. The Roma then traveled to Australia, South Africa, Tasmania, Buenos Aires, and back to England. They traveled because they were not accepted as citizens in any of these countries. When they returned to England, they found that a lot of the Roma had settled down because they couldn’t take the abuse. When Julia lived in a small village in Scotland her family was the target for racism. Local people would vandalize their home and kill their dogs. One day, Julia was playing outside with her sister when a young man threw a brick at her head that spilt her head open. When her sister tried to help her, they beat her with a pipe. In Spain the Roma were fighting against the fascists. Lolo, who joined an Anti-Fascists movement when he lived in Spain, was tortured for ten days and ten nights.
The health outreach trip would give me the opportunity to see firsthand some of the inequalities that are present within healthcare. These inequalities range from access to adequate healthcare providers to the inability to afford adequate healthcare.
In Rabbi Diamond’s Interreligious Experience and Engagement class, I have learned how to show respect and appreciation for all beliefs and religions across the world. In just Los Angeles alone, there countless religions practiced. It is important to educate oneself about other religions to understand the world around us, while also strengthening our own faiths. Most of the semester, we have focused on the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths and how to show interfaith relations between the two. On October 10 at 9:30 AM, for my interfaith field experience, I took the time to visit Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, a Buddhist Temple in Culver City, California at “12371 Braddock Dr., Culver City, California 90230”. I thought it would be interesting to visit a place of worship much different from what we have studied in class thus far.
A social problem I consider to be very critical as of the 21st century would be hate crimes, a hate crime is a violent act against people, property, or organizations because of the group to which they belong or identify with. Hate crimes are committed against many different groups of people. Some hate crimes are crimes against property, such as vandalism and destruction of stores, buildings, and places of worship. While other bigger acts of hate crimes are attacks against people. Hate crimes against individual people can be as petty as simple such as assault without a weapon, but can also be very serious as in the case of rape or murder.
Whatever political empowerment Muslims gained was lost. Prior to 9/11, there was a Muslim liaison in the White House. He was let go after 9/11. In addition, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), America's top Muslim civil rights organization, has been prohibited access to the White House for the most of post 9/11 era unlike in Britain, where Muslim organizations' access to the country's top leaders increased after the July 7, 2005 terrorist
“The Interfaith Amigos” is a TEDx talk by Rabbi Ted Falcon, Pastor Don Mackenzie, and Imam Jamal Rahman. The talk seeks to address the longstanding polarization of and often violent conflict between their three major world religions. They attribute much of this to a general “stuckness,” which Rahman illustrates through the metaphor of a Mullah and his cheese sandwiches. One major example of this “stuckness,” as addressed later in the talk, is the overwhelming racism stemming from misinformation and stereotypes around past and current events.
Their goal is to serve as a community and a religious hub for the Muslims around the area, offering space for prayers, community events, and community services such as funeral, marriage, recitation of the Quran, and teaching of Islamic studies. For the other Mosque, ‘DC Musalla’, they are new to the area, where there they opened their Mosque last year. They created this mosque to spread the awareness and for different communities to come together to study and practice the teaching of the religion Islam. Both Mosques gets their funding from the community, who donate their time and money to keep the Mosque running. These Mosque invites everyone from all different religious and cultural background to join them in their activities and to learn about Islam.

Given the complexity of the programs provided by this organization, director of communication Andy Brown stated that the organization receives a fifty million dollars’ annual budget from the government (Interview). the Wilder organization also collaborates with other social action organizations to meet the needs of the people served. For example, in the mental health program, when clients receive treatment from the organization’s health center, the organization work in partnership with client’s medical insurance provider to take care of the expenses (Andy Brown). The organization was founded in Huntsville, Alabama in 2010 and has been impacting inner-city kids lives ever since by working with them to teach ways to peacefully resolve conflict through words instead of actions, Quan said.
Before addressing a social problem it is important to be able to distinguish between a personal trouble and a public issue using our sociological imagination. Take unemployment for example. If you are unemployed because you have not found the right job or simply do not like to work then it is a personal trouble. This is something you can attempt to fix on your own. It becomes a public issue when it might be the consequence of a decline in the economy. Maybe the reason why you are unemployed is because the company you worked for was forced to reduce its personnel. In this case the problem must be solved by the public because it requires debate on the exact origin of the problem and the values it threatens. Using our sociological imagination allows us to better understand social problems and determine how they can be solved or improved.
