Chalee For this unit I chose the book Wonder By R. J. Palacio. I will be discussing the overall theme of the book which is kindness. Wonder by R. J. Palacio tells the story of ten-year-old August. The boy was born with a face that isn't exactly normal. His eyes were one inch lower then they were supposed to be and he was born without a chin. He has had countless surgeries one of them being taking some of his hip bone and transferring it to where his chin should be. Over the years, because of his many surgeries, he has been homeschooled until it's time to go to middle school(5th grade). This story is told from his perspective as well as from his sister's, her boyfriend's and friends' perspectives. “If every single person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary—the world really would be a better place. And if you do this, if you act just a little kinder than is necessary, someone else, somewhere, someday, may recognize in you, in every single one of you, the face of God.” (8.A Simple Thing.23) With Auggie's facial deformity he was homeschooled, granted he also had to go through many surgeries but nonetheless he has been sheltered up until 5th grade. This can be a good and bad thing, it can be good because he gets a personalized education bad side is that when it's time to go to public school he does not know how to deal with things. He is very hesitant to go to school, but after meeting a couple of students he decides to go away. He keeps a positive attitude about his condition. He knows that he's not a normal 10-year old.
